The 1988 959 was developed for international Group B auto racing. Based on the 911, only 292 were made.

Further along the perimeter of the building visitors come upon the 1988 Porsche 959, which serves as an example of the next Porsche Idea: Intense.

The 959 was conceived as a Group B race car but became the ultimate Porsche supercar. Its twin-turbocharged flat six put out 450 bhp and the car could reach 200 mph. Only 292 were built and they sold out quickly despite exorbitant prices.

A late-model 911 sliced into three cross sections helps demonstrate how a Porsche is created.

The 959 was developed for racing, and Porsche says motorsports are the starting point for the development and improvement of production cars. Several more racers are part of the display, as is a collection of more than 150 trophies earned by Porsche race cars.

Before tourists get to the final idea section, two other special displays grab their attention. One shows Porsche engineering projects for other companies, including a Chinese compact sedan and the Porsche-powered McLaren MP4 TAG Formula 1 racer. Perhaps more interesting is the exhibit titled “How is a Porsche Created?” It is most recognizable by the late-model 911 cut into three cross sections. Here, you can watch films that show the design, development, and production of Porsche vehicles.
