| Tom Appel: Back in high school me and a buddy used to play a game we called "Full Retail Fun." Basically, we grabbed a copy of Consumer Guide Car & Truck Test (really) and totaled up a car's option list to see how expensive a vehicle we could make. We were scandalized when it was first possible for a Chevrolet Caprice to cross the $10,000 line. Well, I am scandalized again. Our test C30 nudges the 30 grand mark, which alone is breathtaking, but can be "full retailed" to, (pause for effect) $41,905. This punchy little hatch just isn't worth that much. It is worth about $25,000 though, and a careful shopper could option their C30 judiciously and keep it about there. Apart from price, this newest Volvo is spry, and its edgy styling will work for the right customer. Stay away from the too-stiff 18-inch wheel and tire setup and you have a novel little ride that's perfect for the hipster with a generous transportation budget. |
Damon Bell: The upscale hatchback is a relative newcomer to the American automotive scene, and the C30 is a credible entry into the genre. Its high points include head-turning styling, a supple, willing powertrain, and pleasant interior appointments. I was put off by the stiff ride and noisy suspension on our "Version 2.0" tester, and by sticker prices which can quickly spiral into the $35-40K neighborhood as the options are tacked on. For that kind of dough, I'd rather have a bigger, more-versatile car, with a traditional trunk and a little more rear-seat space....or an Audi A3. |
| Jennifer Geiger: C30's ride was a bit harsh for my liking, but it was fast, fun to drive, and made a bold statement. Talk about provocative styling! If Volvo's trying to capture a new audience; namely young, hip urbanites versus its traditional family- and safety-oriented buyers; C30's the car that will break the mold. During my test weekend, C30 turned more heads than any other vehicle I've driven--Canary yellow Porsche Cayman included. Either people had heard about it and loved it or had no idea what is was and were really intrigued. |
Chuck Giametta: The Volvo C30 allows you to make your style statement have your substance, too. Its curvy, innovative styling turns heads, the interior is loaded with upscale personality, there's a modicum of hatchback practicality, and a strong engine and tight handling make it fun to drive. Bargain pricing isn't part of the equation, but since when has that been an issue for image-conscious, young, urban consumers for whom the C30 will be this month's flavor? |
