2008 Porsche Cayenne Sneak Peek
The 2008 Porsche Cayenne receives more power, revised front-end styling, and a new performance-oriented model. Cayenne is Porsche's SUV and shares its basic design with the Volkswagen Touareg. Cayenne differs in styling and powertrains. Base, S, GTS, and Turbo models are available. GTS is new for 2008. Base Cayennes have a 290-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine. S, GTS, and Turbo versions have 4.8-liter V8 engines of 385, 405, and 500 hp, respectively. V6 models and the GTS come with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic; V8 S and Turbos are automatic only. Maximum towing capacity is 7716 lb. All Cayennes have all-wheel drive with low-range gearing and locking center differential. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system with rollover sensors, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. A "Sport Button" that alters engine, transmission, and suspension settings for high-performance driving is standard. A driver-adjustable air suspension is standard on GTS and Turbos, optional otherwise. A navigation system is available. The GTS, which is designed for on-road performance, adds 21-inch wheels, and an air suspension with Porsche's Active Suspension Management system, which allows the suspension to be adjusted for either sport or comfort. The GTS will feature seats upholstered in Alcantara leather, and two additional paint colors will be available. The GTS slots in between the S and the Turbo in terms of price. We have not yet tested the 2008 Cayenne.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Volvo XC90.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Buick Enclave.

News
Porsche was known to be mulling a long-wheelbase wagon, a short-chassis 2-dr wagon, and even a 4-dr crew cab pickup, but it's unclear if these ideas are still on the board. Further out, a second-generation Cayenne is expected around 2010 with a gasoline/electric drive system among the powertrain choices. Porsche has promised to offer a hybrid Cayenne using technology shared with one of several mass-market manufacturers, but nothing more is known at the moment.

Meantime, Porsche is working on its first sedan, a sleek 4-dr intended to take on the BMW 6-Series, Mercedes CLS, and other high-style 4-seaters. To be called Panamera, it's expected by 2009 or '10 on a new front-engine platform mounting Cayenne V8s. Production reportedly will be limited to about 20,000 per year for worldwide sale.
