Dodge revived the popular Charger name for 2006, this time as a four-door sedan instead of a hardtop coupe like its 1966-78 namesake. Charger's engines and Mercedes-Benz-derived architecture are shared with the Dodge Magnum wagon and Chrysler 300 sedan. Having tested a 5.7-liter V8 Hemi-powered Magnum R/T over a one-year period, we thought a 3.5-liter V6 Charger would be a good long-term test subject. Our test car is a 2006 Charger SXT.
We have been delighted with our Charger. While the V6 is no Hemi--Chrysler quotes a middling 9.3-second 0 to 60 mph time--it provides plenty of around-town power. The 5-speed automatic transmission works especially well, providing the response needed for worry-free passing. And while our Magnum R/T got only 15.9 mpg over its one-year test, our Charger SXT averaged 19.4 mpg.
The SXT felt especially well balanced, better than the heavier V8-powered Chargers, Magnums, and 300s. The ride was stable and absorbent. Handling was also quite good, though the Charger doesn't match the moves of more-expensive European sedans and sporty midsize sedans.
Charger's size works in the interior's favor. Both seating rows are roomy and comfortable, and the trunk has plenty of room. A split-folding rear seat is not standard on SE models, but is part of the SXT package.
The only complaints we had were somewhat compromised front and rear visibility and only decent fuel mileage. Charger is a fine alternative to V6-powered midsize sedans, including the leading Japanese choices. It gives up some fuel economy and maybe a degree of refinement to those cars, but it's notably roomier and a worthy American effort.

Chuck Giametta: The Charger SXT is the best American sedan on the road. Its steering demands too much attention at highway speeds, but price, powertrain, ride, handling, and accommodations are in rare and wonderful harmony here.
Ed Piotrowski: Charger combines the feel of a traditional big American car with the sporty handling of a European sedan, all the while being nearly as refined as the top Japanese competitors. Unless you're desperate for power, skip the thirsty Hemi V8 in favor of the V6. SXT versions are priced in-line with most midsize sedan rivals.
