Consumer Guide's relationship with our extended-use Galant can be reduced to two words: power and polish. In terms of power, our V6-equipped LS had it to spare; its 3.8-liter engine produced satisfying launch and passing oomph.
Polish has gone wanting, however. In a class dominated by the slickly refined Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, our Galant feels dated. Acceleration is marred by abrupt shifts and a gravelly engine note. Though the Galant's handling borders on sporty, ride quality also falls below expectations-sometimes harsh and nearly always jiggly. The refinement deficit continues inside, where the quality of materials falls well below the class leaders.
Despite the cut-rate materials and indifferent assembly, Galant's interior was roomy and functional. Several editors commented on the easy-to-use and clearly marked audio and climate controls. In addition, the rear seat offers adult-size room, regardless of how far rearward the front seats are positioned.
Despite our concerns with the Galant's overall level of refinement, we remain impressed by the car's considerable power and reasonable pricing. We're worried, however, about Mitsubishi's future in the U.S., and that alone should give buyers pause.
Editors' Comments
Tom Appel: This puppy is aging fast. Squeaks and rattles are poppin' up, and the drivetrain seems more ragged than it did even a few thousand miles ago. I wonder about the long haul for this car.
Mark Bilek: Galant offers room, power, and features comparable to Accord and Camry V6 at a price that is a few thousand less. On the downside, it isn't as solid or refined, and the company and dealership body are suspect.
Rick Cotta: Seems too much effort was placed on styling and not enough on substance. This is an Altima/Malibu competitor, not an Accord/Camry/Passat competitor. But if performance-notably, acceleration-is of prime importance to you, maybe the Galant would warrant a good look.
