The second-generation Mazda 3
sedan made its debut in L.A.

Redesigned 2010 Mazda 3 sedans were the "Zoom-Zoom" brand's major L.A. attraction. Updated hatchbacks were nowhere in sight, but should surface soon. The second-generation 3 seasons first-gen styling themes with a heavy helping of Mazda RX-8 sports car, particularly in the gaping grille and pulled-back headlamps. The architecture is much the same, however, so most dimensions are little changed.

The 2010 Mazda 3 sedan will be offered five ways. The "i" SV, Sport, and Touring use a carryover 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mating to a 5-speed manual transmission or a new 5-speed automatic (replacing a 4-speed option). A 2.5-liter engine with 168 horsepower replaces a 156-horsepower 2.3 in the uplevel "s" Sport and Grand Touring, which also graduate from a 5-speed to a 6-speed manual transmission.

A stability system with traction control is again standard for "s" models and a new no-cost item for the "i" Touring. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags remain standard across the board. Returning options include a navigation system, keyless entry and engine start, and surround-sound audio. Sales begin early in 2009, probably in the first quarter. Prices won't be announced until shortly before that, but aren't expected to be appreciably higher. Look for a new version of the hot-rod Mazdaspeed 3 hatchback later in 2009.
