2010 Lexus RX

The 2010 Lexus RX gets more power, a redesigned instrument panel and fresh styling.
The pioneer crossover SUV entered its 11th year at L.A. with the world premiere of the third-generation Lexus RX. Two versions continue as 2010 models. The RX 350 retains a 3.5-liter V6 that now claims 275 horsepower, up 5 from last year, and mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission instead of a 5-speed. The gas/electric RX 400h gives way to a hybrid RX 450h that uses a modified 3.5 V6 instead of a 3.3-liter engine. Horsepower here rises by 27 to 295, delivered as before through a continuously variable automatic transmission. Both models remain available with front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive that lacks low-range gears.
A new structure with greater claimed rigidity brings small gains in most RX dimensions, though the changes aren't obvious. Neither are the styling alterations, though the new look is a bit crisper and more tailored. The hybrid RX gains visual distinction with a specific grille and front bumper, plus blue-tinted headlamps and taillamps. Both models retain two-row seating for five, but sport a sweeping new instrument panel and standard voice-recognition for some controls.
The optional navigation system goes from DVD operation to a hard-disc drive and includes a new console-mounted "Remote Touch" infotainment controller that's designed to look and function like a computer mouse. We hope it works better than competitive systems like BMW's unloved iDrive. Other features are much as before, but a standard front-passenger knee airbag is added, and Lexus' Pre-Collision System is a first-time RX option. PCS uses radar-type sensors to monitor vehicle position in traffic. If the system detects an unavoidable collision, it readies the brakes and cinches seatbelts to minimize occupant injury.
The 2010 Lexus RX 350 starts sale in February, with the hybrid RX 450h following a month or so later. Prices will be announced shortly before and should be somewhat higher than for '09 models.
2010 Lexus IS Convertible

Lexus adds a convertible model to its IS portfolio.
The drop-top will be offered as an IS 250C and IS 350C with the same V6 powertrains as equivalent sedans, plus most of their standard and optional features. Sales begin late next spring, with prices to be announced just before.
