BMW X5 xDrive35d

2009 BMW xDrive35d
A new entry in the fuel-economy sweepstakes is this diesel-powered luxury SUV from BMW. Standard seating is for five; the third-row seat is a $1,700 option.

Like its gasoline-powered X5 siblings, the xDrive35d comes with BMW’s love-it-or-hate-it iDrive control system; our staff is split on the subject. Our tester was festooned with large manufacturer-applied decals advertising its diesel thriftiness, and they often elicited questions--and a few thumbs up--from people stopped next to us at traffic lights.
