Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI: 22.2 CG mpg

2008 Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI
Compared to the gasoline-fueled ML350, the ML320 CDI is down slightly in horsepower, but packs a wallop of extra torque. The result is a truck that feels (and is) much stronger overall.
The big payoff is at the pump, however. In Consumer Guide testing ML350s averaged a creditable 17-19 mpg, not bad for an SUV. Go with the diesel ML320 and expect something around the 22.2 mpg we observed.
There's little downside to the diesel. It's smooth and impressively quiet, though some of our testers noted a brief delay in acceleration when pulling away from a stop. It's true that diesel fuel costs more than gasoline, and the price will, no doubt, continue to climb. The ML320 CDI is about 20-30 percent more fuel efficient than its gasoline V6 and V8 counterparts. Keeping in mind that non-diesel M-Class models require premium-grade gas, the price difference between the two types of fuel is roughly 8-15 percent.
The ML320 CDI lists for just $1,000 more than the gasoline ML350. It also has a slightly higher projected resale value, according to Kelly Blue Book. It's tough to argue with the ML320 CDI's crafty combination of fuel efficiency, luxury, and nameplate prestige.
