2010 lexus is convertible
The 2010 Lexus IS convertible goes head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series and Infiniti G37 in the premium-hardtop-convertible segment.

Lexus is coming late to the premium- hardtop-convertible game, following long-time player BMW 3-Series and newbie Infiniti G37 (not to mention the somewhat-less-than-premium Volkswagen Eos, and the slow-selling Volvo C70). But late is better than never, and this latest luxury tanning machine has a number of cool features worthy of a big-ticket sun-chaser’s attention.

The Top is Hard

Like the BMW 3-Series and Infiniti G37 convertibles, the IS sports a folding hardtop that offers coupe-like security and a handsome profile when in place.

The Top Folds Down, Fast

Lexus claims the top on its new IS convertible folds completely away in just 20 seconds. According to this reporter’s stopwatch, the top disappears as advertised, and watching it happen is half the fun.

The Price is (Relatively) Low

The IS 250C starts at $39,365 with manual transmission. Compare that figure to the $45,375 and $44,715 starting prices for the 328i and G37 convertibles respectively, and you have the makings of a drop-top bargain. The BMW and Infiniti are somewhat better equipped at that price, but a $5,000 lower base price is still worth bragging about.

It Sounds Good

To this reporter's ear, Lexus’ 3.5-liter V6 sounds both classy and purposeful, and is the perfect complement to top-down motoring. Alas, this music costs money, and the 3.5-liter V6 comes only in the $44,815 IS 350C. The 2.5-liter V6 in the IS 250C is not without its virtues, but its soundtrack is notably less sweet.

It Paves the Way for an IS Coupe

Lexus won’t confirm this, but we view sly responses from PR folks like “stay tuned” as tacit confessions. As all the work of losing two doors was performed in the process of designing the convertible, it seems logical that a coupe can’t be far behind. Besides, the 3-Series and G37 are already available as coupes, and Lexus can’t let BMW and Infiniti have all the fun.
