2008 Toyota 4Runner Review
The 2008 Toyota 4Runner is largely unchanged. This midsize SUV uses traditional truck-type construction. 4Runner comes in SR5, Sport Edition, and Limited trims. All offer a 236-hp 4.0-liter V6 or a 260-hp 4.7-liter V8 engine. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 5000 lb with the V6 and 7300 lb with V8. Rear-wheel drive is standard. V6 versions offer 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement. V8 models are available with all-wheel drive. Both systems include a low-range gear for off-roading and hill ascent and descent control. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. SR5s and Limiteds are available with a 3rd-row seat to increase capacity to seven passengers from five. A firmer suspension is standard on Sport Editions, optional for Limiteds. A load-leveling suspension is available on V8 Limiteds. Other options include DVD entertainment and navigation system with rearview camera.
Competition
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choices are the Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, and Saturn Outlook. Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Veracruz, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Toyota Highlander.

News
A "re-engineering" is being rumored for the 2009-model 4Runners. We think that's code for redesign, as today's vintage-2003 package might be looking a bit gray in two years and in need of replacing. We'll keep you posted.
