New York's annual auto show is the manufacturer's last chance to grab headlines and motivate new-car shoppers for the spring selling season. Headline introductions from Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Hyundai, and Subaru should make a big splash in the Big Apple.

The New York show is all about media exposure. All of the major TV and radio networks as well as prominent print outlets give this show extensive coverage. That makes it very important for each manufacturer to have some sort of presence. Sadly, sometimes this means more flash than substance. But this year was a little different as a few manufacturers took the opportunity to introduce significant volume vehicles on the eve of the spring-selling season. As usual, Consumer Guide® is covering the show live, distilling the hype, cutting to the chase, and providing you with important details you'll need to make the right vehicle choice.

2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class
When Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2006 M-Class at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, many questioned why a third-row seat wasn't offered. Mercedes answered with an all-new model called the R-Class. The R-Class shares chassis, engine and styling with the M, but the wheelbase is stretched 12 inches to 126.6. The additional room between the wheels allowed Mercedes to add a third-row seat for six-passenger seating. Putting the R-Class into perspective, it is five inches longer than a Cadillac Escalade and 10 inches longer than the Cadillac SRX. Two models will be offered when the R goes on sale in October, the RL 350 and the RL 500. The 350 will have a 268-hp V6 while the 500 will have a 302-hp V8. Both vehicles will have a 7-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD with no low range. Standard safety equipment includes curtain airbags that protect all three rows of seats, a sensor to activate the side curtain airbags in a rollover accident, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Options include an AMG sport appearance package, tri-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment, Keyless Go, satellite radio, power liftgate, and first- and second-row sunroofs. The ML 350 is expected to have a base price just south of $50,000. Down the road, Mercedes is will offer a diesel variant. The R-Class will be built alongside the new M-Class in Mercedes' Alabama assembly plant. Short wheelbase versions of the R will be exported to Europe.

2006 BMW 3-Series
Larger and more powerful, the 2006 3-Series models represent the next generation of BMW's legendary sports sedan. Two models are available at launch, both with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. The entry 325i has 215 hp; the 330i, 255. BMW boasts a number of technological advancements for its new 3-Series, including new magnesium-intensive lightweight engines, Valvetronic variable-valve timing engine management, and a stiffer body structure. Also available for the '06 3-Series are steering-linked xenon headlamps and BMW's iDrive driver control system. The often-maligned iDrive uses a “joystick†knob to control entertainment, navigation, communication, and climate functions. Only models ordered with the navigation system will have iDrive. Due in showrooms by summer, the new 3-Series sedans will be joined by coupe and wagon variants during the 2006 calendar year.

BMW also introduced a freshened 2006 7-Series sedan. The V12-powered 760 sedans return, but a new 750 model with a 4.8-liter V8 replaces the 4.4-liter 745s. Without conceding error, BMW softens the frequently criticized rear-end styling of its top-of-the-line sedan for '06, giving the car a less dramatic, more graceful look. The updated 7-Series cars should be in showrooms this fall.

2006 Jeep Commander
At the New York show Jeep took the wraps off the company's first-ever 7-passenger vehicle, the Commander. Riding the same 109.9-in. wheelbase chassis of the recently introduced Grand Cherokee, the Commander adds a third-row seat, two inches of overall length, and four inches of height. That additional height comes in handy as each seating row is raised slightly from the one preceding it. Sharing a chassis with the Grand Cherokee also means sharing engines, transmissions, and 4WD systems. In this case, that means a 3.7-liter V6 or 4.7- or 5.7-liter V8, a five-speed automatic transmission, and either Quadra-Trac I, II, or Quadra-Drive II. Quadra Trac I is similar to all-wheel drive and does not offer a low-range for off-road driving. Quadra-Trac II adds a low range. Quadra Drive II adds a low range and electronically locking front and rear differentials. Stability control and side-curtain airbags for all three seating rows will be standard. Second- and third-row seats don't fold into the floor, but they do fold to create a flat load floor. Optional is a second glass roof panel. The Commander will land in showrooms this October. Jeep officials weren't willing to announce prices or production numbers.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 SRT-8 Jeep had a second surprise for gathered media at the New York show, the Grand Cherokee SRT-8, which according to the company is the fastest SUV ever offered by any manufacturer--and that includes the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Jeep quotes 0-60 mph times of under 5.0 seconds and a 0-100-0 mph time of under 19 seconds. The heart of the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 that thumps out 450 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. It mates to a 5-speed automatic and a full-time AWD system with no low-range. Other SRT (Street and Racing Technology) performance goodies include 20-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, revised shock and spring rates, larger stabilizer bars, and a beefed up steering rack. Styling enhancements include revisions to the front fascia and tail lamps. Inside there are new gauges and race-inspired seats. Towing capacity is reduced to 3500 lb due to the greater cooling needs of the SRT engine. The Grand Cherokee SRT-8 will go on sale in October with a price of about $42,000.

2006 Lexus IS 250/350
Lexus abandons the inline engine with its second-generation IS models, turning instead to a pair of V6s for power. The IS250 and IS350 retain a rear-drive layout, but grow in most dimensions compared to the outgoing IS300. The IS250 has a 2.5-liter V6 good for 200-hp, the IS350 a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 300-hp. Targeting BMW's new-for-2006 3-Series, the new IS models boast such high-end options as steering-linked xenon headlamps, adaptive cruise control, and ventilated front seats. Lexus expects the entry IS250 to account for 80% of sales. Look for the ‘06 IS models to hit showroom floors sometime early in 2006.

Also introduced was the Lexus GS450h. The new top-of-the-line GS features a hybrid drivetrain that Lexus claims delivers the performance of a 4.5-liter V8 from a 3.5-liter V6. Lexus expects the GS450h to reach 60 mph in less than six seconds and average almost 30 mpg in real-world driving. The 2006 GS450h should arrive at Lexus dealers during the 2006 calendar year.

Ford Shelby Cobra GT500 concept
Ford dealers will have something special next summer when the company releases the new Shelby Cobra GT500--the most powerful production Mustang ever. Built with the help of legendary racer and performance tuner Carroll Shelby, this hot new Mustang has the potential to be quicker from 0-60 mph than Chevrolet Corvette or Dodge Viper. Its heart is a 450 hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8. This is the same engine that's found Ford's GT super car. A 6-speed manual transmission is the only one available and it drives a live rear axle. The basic Mustang suspension is retained, but bolstered with stiffer shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars. Nineteen-inch wheels wrap around Brembo brakes. Most interior surfaces are covered in black leather, save the red seat and door panel inserts. Also included are Cobra logos embroidered into the seat backs. Though the car shown in New York was a "tease."Ford officials said the production model would be very similar. Pricing was not discussed, but when pressed Ford said it should be in the $32,000-$36,000 range.

Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenaline concept
At this year's Detroit Auto Show, Ford introduced the Explorer Sport Trac concept. Then in New York it unveiled the Sport Trac Adrenaline. Both concepts hint at a new Sport Trac that will hit Ford showrooms this fall. Built up from a Ford Explorer chassis, the Sport Trac is, in reality, a four-door or crew cab pickup. Competitors would include crew cab versions of the Chevy Colorado, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma. The Adrenaline concept points to a future performance version of the Sport Trac. A supercharged 4.6-liter V8 with 390 hp mates to a 6-speed automatic. Features include all-wheel drive, independent rear suspension, and stability control. Ford officials hinted that this special version of the Sport Trac would be available in 2007.

2006 Bentley Flying Spur
Sharing a platform and drivetrain with the Bentley Continental Coupe, the Flying Spur sedan is Bentley's newest offering in the “ultra-luxury†field. Expected to list in the $180,000 range, the newest Bentley will be priced well below comparably sized products from Rolls Royce and Maybach. The Flying Spur shares mechanical and chassis elements with the Continental Coupe, including its turbocharged 552-hp 6-liter W12 engine and all-wheel-drive system. Bentley boasts that the Flying Spur will be the British maker's fastest sedan ever, capable of reaching 60 mph in under five seconds and exceeding 190 mph. As with the Continental coupe, Bentley will allow Flying Spur buyers to custom outfit the interior of their cars, choosing from a near endless selection off leather and wood finishes. The first Flying Spurs should arrive in showrooms before the end of 2005 as '06 models.

2006 Cadillac XLR-V
At a press event cut awkwardly short by the presence of none other than Donald Trump, Cadillac introduced its latest high-performance offering: XLR-V. Joining the CTS and STS in receiving the V suffix, the XLR-V boasts a considerable performance boost over the standard XLR roadster. Power comes from a supercharged 440-hp 4.4-liter V8, 120-hp more than base versions. Suspension and steering tweaks should improve handling. Supporting the power boost aesthetically, a mesh grille, 19-inch alloy wheels, and aluminum interior trim add visual impact. Cadillac claims the supercharged XLR-V will reach 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The 2006 XLR-V should arrive in showrooms late in 2005. Pricing has not been announced.

Though distracted by the XLR-V, Donald Trump was on hand to take delivery of the first 2006 Cadillac DTS Executive Limousine. The Cadillac DTS to scheduled to replace the De Ville on dealer lots for 2006.

Nissan Sport concept
At the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, Nissan showed a concept coupe called the Azeal. This concept was clearly aimed at the same market Toyota's youth-division Scion is trying to appeal to--Generation Y. Following up the Azeal intro is an even more production-ready concept called simply the Sport. More mainstream in size and design, the Sport rides a 102.4-inch wheelbase and is similar in size to the Mitsubishi Lancer or Toyota Matrix. However, the Sport is a two-door hatchback that seats just four passengers. Being a concept, the Sport is more about style and function than about practicality. The exterior features 20-inch 6-spoke alloy wheels and carbon-fiber composite parts. Inside, the leather seats have suede inserts and 4-point seatbelts. The Sport was designed in Nissan's Japanese design studios and is not intended for immediate production. However, Nissan officials did say that a vehicle like the Sport would be right at home in Nissan showrooms in the not-too-distant future.

Scion t2B concept
Another Generation-Y influenced concept unveiled at the New York show was the Scion t2B. Taking styling cues from the cube-like Scion xB, the t2B adds more interior space and a number of “gee-whiz†features. The 2tB rides an all-new chassis with a 106.3-inch wheelbase, which is eight inches longer than the xB. On the driver side it features a rear-opening half door. On the passenger side there is a single sliding side door, similar to what might be found on a minvan. Other unique touches include dual glass panels above the second row seats and a tri-level instrument panel that features wrap-around display screens. Also included in the t2B concept is a roof-mounted projector that can show video on the back window. Mechanical details were sketchy, but Scion did confirm that the t2B concept has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and 20-inch wheels. There was no discussion of production or prices.
Scion's president, Jim Farley, also announced a special edition tC. Called the tC Release Series 1.0. It adds unique paint color, 18-inch wheels, aluminum doorsills and $1775 to the base price of the tC. The Series 1.0 will be in showrooms shortly and will be produced in a limited number.

2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
Bringing rally racing to the street, Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution is updated for 2006 with fresh styling and more power. The Evo IX now boasts 286-hp from its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cyl engine, up from 276 hp. Credit most of the gain to Mitsubishi's new variable-valve timing engine management system. Other mechanical revisions included revised gear ratios to make better use of the additional power, and a newly available Active Center Differential (ACD). To better suit specific driving needs, the ACD provides three driver-selectable AWD modes: pavement, gravel, and snow. The Evolution will again be available in base, RS, and MR trim. RS models eschew such niceties as power windows and door locks to reduce weight and lower price. MR models feature xenon headlamps and unique trim and wheels. Evolution MR buyers will be able to order an interior dress-up package that includes an aluminum shift knob, carbon-fiber trim, and an aluminum hand-brake grip. The new Evos will appear in Mitsubishi showrooms this fall as 2006 models.

2006 Hyundai Azera
There's no ignoring Hyundai's move into the mainstream any more. The company is number four in U.S. import sales and the midsize Hyundai Sonata was just named the most reliable car by a leading consumer publication. To illustrate this point, Hyundai unveiled the new Azera at the New York show. Replacing the XG350 as Hyundai's flagship this fall, Azera is larger inside than the Toyota Avalon or Nissan Maxima and offers an industry-leading eight airbags. Wheelbase is 109.4 inches, just over an inch longer than the outgoing XG. The Azera shares some chassis commonality with the new Sonata, but nothing with any product from sister-company Kia. Three models will be offered, GLS, LX, and Limited. All include a 3.8-liter 265-hp V6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, and stability control. Limited models add a sunroof, power-adjustable memory pedals, rain-sensing wipers, a 10-speaker Infiniti audio system, a power rear sunshade, and power tilt/telescope steering wheel. No comment was offered on price or production numbers.

Hyundai officials also announced a partnership with XM Satellite Radio. Starting next year, Hyundai will offer XM Radio as standard equipment in many of its products. By 2007 it will be standard across every model line. Included will be three months of free programming.

2006 Hyundai Accent
Bookending the Hyundai model lineup at the New York show was an all-new Accent, the company's lowest-priced vehicle. The current Accent saw its last facelift in 2003. The new Accent will roll into showrooms this fall. While it remains a small front-drive compact car, overall length grows 1.8 inches and wheelbase grows 2.3 inches. According to Hyundai the new interior is the roomiest in the class. Only one model will be offered, the GLS. It's powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that's mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Front, side, and curtain side airbags will be standard. Other standard features will include power rack and pinion steering, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM/CD player, and a split-folding rear seat. The new Accent shares engine and chassis with the new-for-‘05 Kia Rio. Hyundai officials leaked that a 3-door hatchback version will be available sometime in 2006.

2006 Isuzu I-Force i-280 and i-350Doubling the make's lineup, the i-280 and i-350 compact pickups should stave off the closing of a few Isuzu dealerships next year. Supplied by General Motors, the new I-trucks are nearly identical to the Chevrolet Colorados and GMC Canyons on which they are based. Isuzu went to considerable effort to defend this arrangement, correctly noting that Isuzu led the design effort of the original Colorado and Canyon, thus making the i-trucks true Isuzus. True as this may be, to buyers the new trucks are virtual clones of the Chevys and GMCs next to which they will be built. The i-280 has a 2.8-liter inline 4-cyl engine and comes only in 2WD extended cab trim. The i-350 has a 3.5-liter inline 5-cyl engine and comes only in 4WD crew cab trim. Aesthetically, only unique grille inserts and minor tweaking differentiates the new Isuzus from their GM-badged cousins. Currently, North American Isuzu dealers sell only 5- and 7-passenger versions of the Ascender, itself a rebadged version of the GMC Envoy. Expect to see the 2006 Isuzu i-trucks on dealer lots early next year.

2006 Subaru Forester
Arriving in dealerships this June will be a freshened Subaru Forester. The Forester is a car-based wagon that helped define the compact SUV market when it was introduced in 1998. For 2006, Forester gets revised exterior styling, a freshened interior, and more power. The grille, headlamps, front quarter panels, and hood are new and intended, according to Subaru, to give the Forester a more truck-like appearance. Four trim levels will be offered: 2.5X, 2.5X w/Premium package, 2.5XS L.L. Bean, and 2.5XT Limited. All will be available with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. All but the XT get a 173 hp engine (up 8 from last year). The XT gets a turbocharged and intercooled engine with 230 hp (up 20 from last year). Ground clearance is increased from 7.5 to 8.1 inches. All-wheel drive is standard on all models. Curtain airbags are not offered, but front chest-and-head-protecting airbags are standard. L.L. Bean models will add Leather-trimmed seats with embossed logos, a Momo steering wheel and matching shifter, 10-spoke alloy wheels, embroidered floormats, a self-leveling rear suspension, vehicle alarm, and a water-resistant cargo area. The XT Limited will have sport suspension, rear limited-slip differential, sunroof, and 6-disc CD changer. Subaru expects the new Forester to be priced between $22,000-$28,000.

Suzuki Concept X2
Suzuki unveiled the nearly production-ready X2 as a concept, but announced that the real deal would appear as a 2007 model. About the size of Chevrolet's Equinox, the X2 will greatly expand Suzuki's reach into mainstream America. Although drivetrain specifics are unavailable, Suzuki plans for a 185-hp V6 engine coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission to be standard. For X2 drivers who actually plan to venture off road, the newest Suzuki SUV will offer available AWD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and an optional locking center differential for really challenging terrain. Planned safety features include standard front side airbags, curtain side airbags, ABS, and stability control. Expect the X2 to replace the aging Grand Vitara and XL-7 in Suzuki's North American lineup. The X2 should appear in showrooms towards the end of 2006.

2006 Dodge Charger SRT-8 & Police Package
Expanding the reach of its Street and Racing Technology (SRT) program, the Chrysler Group added yet another vehicle to the stable, this time the Dodge Charger SRT-8. Sharing most of the upgrades afforded the Chrysler 300C SRT-8, the hyper-tweaked Dodge now boasts 425-hp from a 6.1-liter version of the ubiquitous Hemi V8. Like other SRT vehicles, the Charger's brakes, suspension, and styling were also modified as part of the SRT upgrade. Dodge claims 0-60 mph performance in the 5-second range. Pricing was not available, but expect a sticker price slightly lower than the Chrysler 300C SRT-8's $39,370.

Dodge also launched the first serious challenge to Ford's lock on the police cruiser market in over a decade. Likely to find space in many law-enforcement motor pools is the Dodge Charger in police-pursuit trim. Similar to the Charger RT, police models will feature steel wheels, a console modified to accept communications equipment, and available Hemi power. Though not yet available, Dodge claims a number of police forces are already on the waiting list. Look for a black and white charger in your rear-view mirror by the end of
