Audi's Cross Cabriolet Quattro concept is based on its forthcoming Q5 premium compact SUV.

Currently on a U.S. sales hot-streak, Audi previewed its 2009 Q5 crossover with a high-style concept convertible, the Cross Cabriolet Quattro. Aside from a folding top and two doors, it forecasts the dimensions, general look, and some features of the upcoming fixed-roof four-door wagon, which will join the fast expanding class of premium compact SUVs a la Acura RDX and BMW X3. The Cross Cabriolet--and thus Q5--shares Audi's "MLB" modular architecture with the new A5/S5 coupes and the redesigned A4 premium compact cars due in early 2008. It measures 181.9 inches long, 75.2 inches wide and 64.2 inches tall over a 110.6-inch wheelbase.

Under the concept's hood is a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that's coming soon to Audi's big Q7 SUV and may be available for its kid brother. Q5 will definitely offer two gasoline engines: a base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with some 200 horses and a 3.6-liter V6 with around 280. A new eight-speed automatic transmission should couple with standard all-wheel drive.

Other Cross Cabrio items that Q5 might inherit include auto-adjusting shock absorbers, electrically variable ride height, and Audi's new three-mode "drive select" system that tailors suspension and powertrain operation for various road conditions. There's also a navigation system that integrates Google Earth photo-mapping and search functions through a real-time Internet link. But why use a convertible to preview an SUV? Audi says the Cross Cabriolet Quattro was inspired by the late-1940s Willys Jeepster, a stylish drop-top takeoff on the utilitarian Army Jeep.
