2012 Maserati Gran Turismo: What is it?
The Maserati brothers built only race cars prior to World War II. After the war they added road cars to the line. The Maserati sports car was often Ferrari's prime competitor. In 1997 Maserati was bought by Fiat which also owns Ferrari. Today the Maserati V8 engine is related to Ferrari's V8. Maseratis tend to be larger and less overtly sporty than their Ferrari stablemates. Although fast, Maserati puts an emphasis luxury grand touring—hence the model name. Maseratis are also less expensive than Ferraris. The Gran Turismo coupe and convertible seat four and share much of their basic design with the Maserati Quattroporte sedan.
2012 Maserati Gran Turismo: What's New
For 2012 the convertible gains a Sport version with more horsepower and and a firmer suspension. The MC coupe is new with a more powerful engine and more precise handling than other Gran Turismo models. All engines are now 4.7-liter V8s. The previously used 4.2-liter is no longer offered.
2012 Maserati Gran Turismo: Model Lineup, Features, and Options
The S coupe and base convertible have similar equipment and share the same engine. The Sport convertible and MC coupe have a more powerful engine. Adjustable suspension with Normal and Sport settings is standard on S coupe, base convertible and Sport convertible, while optional on the MC coupe. Standard on all models are dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, and a rear obstacle detection system. Also standard are a navigation system, power adjustable front seats with memory that power forward to ease entry to the rear seats, and a power tilt and telescopic steering column. A synthetic-suede headliner is standard on MC and optional on S coupe. Options include front-obstacle detection, carbon-fiber interior trim, and matte-finish paint.
2012 Maserati Gran Turismo: Engines, Transmissions, and Drive Wheels
S and base have a 433-horsepower 4.7-liter V8. The Sport convertible and MC coupe have a 444-horsepower version of the 4.7-liter V8. All use a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-column-mounted shift paddles. The MC's automatic transmission is recalibrated for faster shifts and is optional on the S. According to Maserati, the S coupe can accelerate 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 183 mph. The MC does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and can reach 187. The heavier base convertible accelerates 0-60 in 5.15 seconds and has a top speed of 176 mph. The Sport convertible does 0-60 in 5.0 seconds and is 1 mph faster. All Gran Turismos are rear-wheel drive.

The EPA rates the Gran Turismo coupe at 13 mpg city/21 mpg highway. The convertible gets 13 city/20 highway.

All federally mandated and expected safety features are standard on Gran Turismo. Convertibles have roll bars that are automatically deployed in case of an accident.
