Saab is releasing a limited-edition version of its 9-3 convertible in order to commemorate its first year as an independent automaker.

The 2011 Saab 9-3 Independence Edition is based on the top-line Aero model. As such it comes with most features that luxury buyers want. Leather upholstery with orange contrast piping is standard, along with steering-linked xenon headlights. The unique orange paint appears to be inspired by cars produced by boutique builder Spyker Cars, the company that now owns Saab.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission powers the car. Markets outside North America will get a 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine.

Worldwide production is limited to 366 units. Only about 120 are slated for the U.S. market. Pricing is expected to start at about $46,000 with only two available options: a navigation system and rear-obstacle detection. They should be available for ordering very soon.

CG Says:

The Saab 9-3 convertible is a well engineered but very expensive vehicle. The Independence Edition has a unique look that’s sure to delight the die-hard Saab aficionado who would be most likely to purchase it. Otherwise, there’s not a whole lot here to sway other luxury convertible shoppers, especially since rivals Audi A5 and BMW 3-Series are more refined.
