Fiat debuted the 2012 500c convertible at the 2011 New York Auto Show.
The 2012 Fiat 500c is powered by the 101-horsepower 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine found in the hatchback model. It teams with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine is equipped with the company’s MultiAir technology that individually controls the engine’s valves for optimized power and efficiency. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, and a driver-knee airbag.
The 500c’s power-folding soft top can be fully opened or stopped above the rear window. It can be deployed at speeds up to 60 mph.
The 2012 Fiat 500c comes in two trim levels. Entry-level Pop models include power windows/locks, power heated mirrors, an infotainment system, wireless cell-phone link with voice recognition, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Range-topping Lounge models add some features: chrome exterior accents, fog lights, premium cloth upholstery, satellite radio, automatic climate control, and an upgraded audio system. Optional equipment includes a removable navigation system with steering-wheel-mounted controls, and a wealth of personalizing accessories.
Prices start at $19,500. The 2012 Fiat 500c will go on sale in late spring of 2011.
CG Says:
Again capitalizing on the Fiat 500’s vintage roots, the company adds a convertible version to this microcar’s portfolio. Largely identical to the hardtop 500, the 500c promises decent passenger space, a relatively quiet top-up driving experience, and impressive fuel economy. The ability to partially open the top for a full-length sunroof effect is a unique advantage few other convertibles offer, the Mini Cooper and Smart ForTwo convertibles among them. However, unlike all convertibles, the side roof rails are not removable, which some may see as a disadvantage. The 500 is an efficient car with a premium feel, and the convertible version should follow suit.
