General Motors’ volume division enters the 2010 model year with product changes that mostly include model, trim, and powertrain simplifications. The only new product is the reborn Camaro, a car that’s finally at dealerships after more than three years of concepts, teasers, and promises. A redesigned Equinox midsize crossover SUV also debuts with the hope that it addresses the many criticisms that plagued its predecessor (sloppy ride, poor handling, subpar fuel economy). Note that models not mentioned here see minor trim or otherwise no significant changes.

2010 Chevrolet Avalanche: The optional 6.0-liter V8 engine has been discontinued, leaving a 5.3-liter V8 as the sole engine for this Suburban-based crew-cab pickup truck.

2010 Chevrolet Aveo: Chevy’s smallest car gets a two-horsepower boost; manual-transmission versions get a one-mpg boost to EPA highway fuel-economy ratings.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro: The modern “pony-car wars” kick into full gear with the re-introduction of Chevy’s entry-level sports car. V6 LS and LT and V8 SS versions are offered. Coming mid-model year is an appearance package designed to make the Camaro look like the one used in the movie TRANSFORMERS.

2010 Chevrolet Cobalt: The high-performance SS models will be discontinued over the course of the model year.

2010 Chevrolet Corvette: The Grand Sport is a new model. It has similar equipment and suspension tuning to that of the now-discontinued Z51 Performance Handling Package.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox: Chevy’s five-passenger midsize crossover SUV is redesigned with freshened styling and new features. For the first time, Equinox offers a 4-cylinder engine, a 182-horsepower 2.4-liter. Carrying over from the previous-generation version is GM’s “MultiFlex” rear seat that can slide fore and aft up to 8 inches to benefit passenger or cargo room.

2010 Chevrolet HHR: After a single model year, the utilitarian, yet high-performance SS Panel has been discontinued.

2010 Chevrolet Impala: The V8-powered Impala SS has been discontinued.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu: The gas/electric hybrid model has been dropped from retail sale, but it remains available for fleet sales.

2010 Chevrolet Tahoe: The base 4.8-liter and top-end 6.2-liter V8 engines have been dropped, leaving a 5.3-liter V8 as the only engine for non-hybrid versions of this large SUV.
