V70 is down on power compared to other midsize premium cars, but it moves along nicely just the same. There's more than adequate power from a stop, and enough reserve power for fuss-free passing and merging. The smooth transmission is quick to respond to throttle inputs.

In Consumer Guide testing, we averaged 21.6 mpg in an even mix of city and highway driving. Volvo recommends premium-grade gas.

V70 3.2 delivers a commendable balance of road feel and bump isolation. It doesn't smother potholes and street imperfections completely, but it does eliminate the harshness. R-Design models have a sport suspension and 18-inch wheels, but no examples have been made available for Consumer Guide evaluation.

Wind and road noise are kept well in check. The engine sounds refined, with its noise only really noticeable under hard throttle.

We have not yet tested a V70 or similar XC70 with the available navigation system. Without the system, V70's control layout is simple and generally intuitive. Gauges are large, clearly marked, and easy to read. Several testers find the digital bar graph a poor substitute for a conventional fuel gauge.

Cabin materials are padded and/or nicely grained where it matters most. Assembly quality is first rate. Standard vinyl and cloth seating surfaces feel durable and expensive, but in the gray of our test car appeared solemnly bland. We have not tested a V70 with leather seating, but in a similar XC70, the wood and leather included in the Premium Package lends a welcome luxury ambiance to the interior.

Plenty of headroom and legroom, even for taller occupants. Thin roof pillars and large glass areas combine for excellent all-around visibility.

Decent space for two adults, but three across seating is acceptable only for short hops. Under-seat foot space is limited, compromising comfort when the front seats are too far back.

Large, boxy, nicely finished cargo area features flat-folding second-row seats and handy under-floor storage. A storage-lid prop and cargo tie-down points are nice touches. In-cabin storage is limited to an average size glovebox and center console, as well as a few tiny cubbies.

This midsize wagon is best appreciated as the value-seeker's luxury car.
