The new Sportback body style is a welcome addition to the Lancer lineup. It brings a uniquely swoopy hatchback roofline along with a bit more cargo utility. In terms of overall refinement, Lancer is a step behind most compact rivals. Nevertheless, this reasonably pleasant, fun-to-drive, decently balanced hatchback feels like more than the sum of its parts.

Don Sikora

Our 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS Sportback was an enjoyable weekend companion. I liked the ride and handling balance, the nice shifter and clutch, a comfortable cabin, and the handiness of a large hatch opening with a fairly low load floor. The interior looks to be solidly made, but the materials are unexceptional and the engine note isn't sporty or pleasing. Still, the Sportback's package might be a bit greater than the sum of its parts, and for those looking for a compact that's beyond the ordinary, this Lancer could make a decent choice.

Ed Piotrowski

Based on my previous experiences with the current-generation Lancer lineup, I was not expecting much from the Sportback. But after a weekend, I can honestly say that this is an impressive effort. Though not very powerful, this hatch is pretty fun to drive. It comes off better than a Dodge Caliber, Toyota Matrix, and even a Chevy HHR. It can't match the outstanding Mazda 3 for performance or refinement, but Lancer Sportback makes a much stronger case for itself than you might think. Give it a look.

The GTS is an entertaining car with good fuel economy. The interior is well finished and has good room for a compact.
