ACCELERATION
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 5 |
A Hybrid is the only 2010 Mercury Milan made available for testing. It's a bit sluggish from a stop, but builds speed well once underway. The gas/electric transition is very smooth, as is the performance of its continuously variable automatic transmission.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 10 | 5.8 |
In Consumer Guide testing, one Milan Hybrid averaged an outstanding 38.8 mpg. Another Hybrid averaged 35.2 mpg, also a very good result. All models use regular-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.8 |
The Hybrid's extra weight helps tamp down most bumps a bit better than similar, conventional Ford Fusions. It does bang and crash a bit over large bumps, with one test model especially susceptible to this behavior. Its overall ride quality is quite supple, though.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.5 |
Hybrid models have some quirks that are not noticeable in conventional models. The brakes have a grabby feel and are tricky to modulate, resulting in stops that are not always smooth or linear. Its electric power steering lacks road feel. On the flip side, Milan Hybrid shows good grip and balance in turns.
QUIETNESS
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.7 |
The engine groans in fast acceleration, and it doesn't fully recede while cruising. There is some bump noise from the suspension, and coarse-surface thrum from the low-rolling-resistance tires. Despite this, the Hybrid is impressively quiet on the whole.
CONTROLS
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 6.2 |
The instruments, graphic displays, and most controls are readily accessible. Hybrid models have a unique "SmartGauge" digital readout that's simple to read and includes helpful guides for driving efficiently. Some testers find the SmartGauge helpful, others think it's gimmicky. Audio and climate controls are mostly separate from the navigation system, though they're mounted rather low on the dashboard center stack. The navigation system itself takes some study to fully understand.
DETAILS
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 5.2 |
Milan's interior is modern and smartly appointed, with ample padding and generous use of soft-touch surfaces. A few dull plastics are present, but not in significant quantity to detract from a classy overall ambiance.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.6 |
Adequate headroom and legroom on very comfortable seats. The seats are also relatively high set, which contributes to fine outward visibility. All Milans have a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a driver-comfort plus.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.3 |
The rear seat is very supportive and has fine headroom and legroom. Long doors are a problem in tight parking spots, but they open wide, making entry and exit easy.
CARGO ROOM
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.2 |
Milan Hybrid has 11.8 cu ft of cargo volume versus 16.5 cu ft for conventional models. The Hybrid's trunk is wide but not very deep. Its battery pack also precludes having folding rear seatbacks. Interior storage is great and includes a good-size glovebox, a roomy two-tier console box, a dashtop bin, and other various cubbies.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Hybrid w/navigation | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6 |
Like the similar Ford Fusion, Milan brings a number of worthwhile features to the table. It's roomy, comfortable, and quite refined. The Hybrid is noteworthy for its quietness and, based on our testing, exceptionally frugal. Any Milan model is well worth your consideration.
