ACCELERATION
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 7 |
SL550 is smooth and powerful. Mercedes-Benz quotes 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which feels right to us. The transmission provides prompt shifts at any speed. No other SL-Class models have been made available for testing so far.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 3.6 |
In Consumer Guide testing, we averaged 17.4-18.4 mpg, decent numbers for the class. All SL-Class models require premium-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 3.5 |
Surprisingly good with the available 19-inch tires. Moderately sharp bumps cause mild jolting and the occasional sidestep, even in non-aggressive driving. These unwanted motions caused the rollover bars in one test model to activate, and the bars would not retract. This required a system reset, which had to be performed by a dealership technician. Convertible cowl shake and body quiver are not noticeable with the top up, but a little bit filters through with the top down.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 7.2 |
SL never feels truly agile, though it corners with linear steering and little body lean. Good stopping control is marred by soft pedal action.
QUIETNESS
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 3.6 |
The engine makes a sporty but refined growl while accelerating. Some exhaust noise is always present, but it's never annoying. Top up, most all types of noise are well filtered. Top down, conversations are possible at highway speeds. The wind blocker does little to reduce wind buffeting.
CONTROLS
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 4.7 |
Like most Mercedes-Benz models, SL uses a version of the company's COMAND control system. In this application, it lacks the center-console joystick found on the CL- and S-Class models. This makes it much harder to do things, such as change radio station bands or operate the navigation system. The gauges are easy enough to read, though performing simple tasks like resetting the trip odometer requires multiple button presses.
DETAILS
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 9 | 6.1 |
The SL's cabin has a sportier ambience than a CL- or S-Class. However, that doesn't mean it lacks richness. Materials quality is first-rate, as is assembly.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 4.9 |
Even larger adults will have plenty of room. The ventilated seats are particularly handy for top-down summer driving. A low-slung body and long doors complicate entry and exit. When raised, the wind blocker severely restricts rear visibility.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 0 | .6 |
No rear seating.
CARGO ROOM
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2.2 |
Mercedes-Benz claims SL has 10.2 cu ft of cargo space with the top up and 7.2 with it lowered. Not all that space is usable or handy. Even a weekend's worth of luggage for two will require some careful packing. Interior storage includes a modestly sized center console bin, glovebox, and handy storage inside the door armrests. There are also bins behind the seats.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SL550 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.7 |
It's hard to call a vehicle priced at or above $100,000 a good value, particularly one that can only accommodate two people. The SL-Class, though, makes as compelling a case as any. These convertibles are fresh looking, solidly built, impeccably finished, and a pleasure to drive.
