Mercedes-Benz's new premium compact SUV is a genuinely luxurious vehicle. Its strong points include classy interior trimmings and outstanding headroom front and rear. Our tester was equipped with the optional Appearance Package, which brings 20-inch wheels--these beefy rollers amp up the parking-lot presence, but I think they also bring a stiffer, more-fidgety ride. Base prices are very reasonable, but balloon quickly as the options are added.

Like the recently redesigned BMW Z4, the Mercedes GLK is nice vehicle. Until you look at the price. As equipped, this test car shoots past the $50,000 barrier. Several thousand dollars less will buy any number of other, larger, similarly fuel-efficient SUVs.

A comfortable ride and handling ease are obvious strong points of Mercedes-Benz's new little SUV. If only the price tag were commensurately sized. The tab with options and delivery on the example tested shot up past $50,000. That kind of money could buy you a lot more SUV in some other showrooms.
