The Mazda 3 i Touring might be one of the "base" models of the lineup, but there's nothing basic about it. While merely competitive on power, features, and interior space, no other rival can match this car's refinement and fun-to-drive character. Any 3 ranks among the most-expensive cars in this class, but you more than get what you pay for.

The Mazda 3 tops my list in the compact car category. It's composed, adequately powered, relatively sporty, and decently priced. The hatchback body style adds an extra bonus of versatility.

The Mazda 3i is a nicely constructed, very livable small car with decent performance. That makes it a must-see for segment shoppers in this tester's book.

Some odd equipment choices force a buyer wanting air and power locks with remote into at least an i Touring, which starts at $17,500. But that also brings an antiskid system, so that model has all the safety and convenience basics. It's also just a very nice car; solid feeling and a real pleasure to drive. As a result, Mazda's 3 remains a great choice in the compact segment, perhaps even the best.

Honda had this segment all but locked up, but now Mazda has the "must see" car. The Civic is no less fabulous than it has always been, but the 2010 Mazda 3 may be its match. Score huge points for roominess, ride comfort and quietness. Unless a bargain price is your only goal, add this car to your compact-car shopping list.

The Mazda 3's extensive updates for 2010 hone what was already one of the best compact cars on the market. Our well-equipped s tester stickered for $24,760, which seems a little pricey at first blush. However, considering the near-premium feel of the interior and the many unexpected upscale features, that price is very competitive. A wonderful ride/handling balance and delightfully accurate steering are highlights of any 3.
Jack Stewart
Although pricey for a compact, Mazda 3 is fun to drive and has an upscale interior. Unless one needs a roomy back seat, the 3 makes sense for many buyers.
