ACCELERATION
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 9 | 6.9 |
Normally aspirated XKs have strong, immediate acceleration. Jaguar claims the XL coupe does 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, the convertible in 5.3, and the superhcarged XKR coupe in 4.6 seconds. All those times seem accurate to us. All models enjoy a quick-acting automatic transmission that doesn't hesitate to downshift for effortless highway passing. Standard steering-wheel paddles are easy to use and provide even faster gear changes.
FUEL ECONOMY
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3 | 3.6 |
In Consumer Guide testing, an XK coupe averaged 16.7 mpg. Convertibles averaged 17.6 mpg in city/highway driving and 19.7 with more highway use. An XKR coupe averaged 16.8 mpg. All require premium-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 6 | 3.5 |
The well-controlled suspension delivers a firm but comfortable ride devoid of jolts and highway float. XK is best with the standard 19-inch wheels. With the convertible, chassis flex is noticeable only over railroad tracks and sharp bumps, and even then only with the top down. The adjustable shock absorbers on the XKR do a good job of damping sharp bumps--even with 20-inch wheels.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 9 | 7.2 |
There's little body lean, even in fast turns. All have crisp response and tenacious grip on curves. Steering is quick and precise, and the brakes are strong and sure. XKR's moves are even more finely honed.
QUIETNESS
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 5 | 6 | 3.6 |
The engine growls nicely during acceleration, but cruises quietly on the coupes. There is some slight wind hiss from closed side windows on the coupe. Convertibles suffer from noticeable wind rush, even with the top up. Some tire noise is noticeable, particularly with the 20-inch tires, but it's never obtrusive.
CONTROLS
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 4.7 |
On all XKs, most radio and climate functions are incorporated into the touch-screen navigation system, slowing and complicating their use; redundant steering-wheel controls help. Getting to some secondary controls requires drilling through a number of menus, which is a major distraction while driving.

Cabin materials are high quality and well-assembled. Standard wood or available aluminum trim each creates an inviting ambiance.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 7 | 4.9 |
Seats are well padded and comfortable, although the cabin might be a bit too cozy for some. Kudos to Jaguar for making air-conditioned seats standard. XK's power tilt and telescopic steering column helps most find a comfortable driving position. Low build complicates entry and exit. Thick rear roof pillars obscure the view to the rear corners, a problem made even worse in the convertible. The standard rearview camera helps offset this somewhat.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|

A token gesture. The seat is best used for parcels. Entry and exit require contortions, even for short passengers.
CARGO ROOM
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 2 | 3 | 2.1 |
Demands careful packing. The coupe's hatchback design eases access to the luggage area. The rear seatbacks do not fold, however. Ordering the optional run-flat tires omits a spare tire and frees up additional cargo space beneath the floor. The cabin lacks small-item storage.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| XK Coupe | XK Convertible w/20-inch wheels | XKR coupe | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 7 | 6 | 4.7 |
An enticing blend of grown-up performance and sporty luxury makes XK a Recommended choice. XKR adds even more performance and sharper handling. The convertible's fabric top is well insulated and consumes less cargo room folded when compared with convertibles that use retractable tops. Price-wise, Jaguar's base XKs slot attractively between comparable versions of the BMW 6-Series and the Mercedes CL- and SL-Class, while XKRs are cheaper than an M6 or SL63.
