ACCELERATION
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 9 | 7 |
The 4.2-liter V8 is satisfyingly quick at any speed. The Premium's normally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 delivers immediate and substantial power. The XFR's supercharged V8 is faster still. Jaguar says XFR goes 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, and that estimate feels credible to us. The transmission provides smooth, fast shifts with any engine.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 4 | 4 | 4.6 |
In Consumer Guide testing, a base XF averaged 18.2 mpg. An XF Premium averaged just 13.6 mpg, a disappointing figure even for a test that was almost exclusively city driving. Test XFR models averaged 15.9 mpg in mostly city driving and 21.4 mpg in mostly highway driving. Premium-grade gas is required.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 7 | 7 | 6.2 |
The Base and Premium are generally comfortable, though rippled roads induce some nervous wheel patter, more so in the latter than the former. The automatic suspension control of the XFR results in a rather firm ride.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 8 | 6.8 |
XF corners with good grip and little body lean. Steering is well weighted and precise. Brakes are strong, but were touchy on one test car. The XFR adds even more grip and stability.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 7 | 6.7 |
Wind rush and most mechanical noises are well muted. The 4.2-liter V8 has a pleasant growl under acceleration and cruises quietly. The same goes for the normally aspirated and supercharged 5.0-liter V8s. The XFR's engine exhibits a little bit of supercharger whine, but it's not annoying. Some tire thrum makes its way into the cabin on coarse surfaces on all models, but it's most prevalent in the XFR.
CONTROLS
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 6 |
Gauges are unobstructed. Jaguar eschews a control-knob interface (a la Audi and BMW) in favor of a touchscreen for most audio and climate functions. This doesn't necessarily work to XF's benefit. Many simple tasks require performing quite a few "virtual button" presses, and drilling down through several menu screens to access some audio functions. Redundant controls on the steering wheel help a bit.
DETAILS
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 7.3 |
Quality wood, leather, and aluminum, with an abundance of padded surfaces contribute to an upscale ambiance. XFR and models equipped with the optional Portfolio Package add a suede-like headliner. JaguarSense is an interesting novelty, as is the rotary-knob transmission gear selector.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 7.1 |
Though not ample, space is adequate for most adults. A standard power tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps drivers find a comfortable position. The seats are comfortable with good support. XF's low, swooping roofline means tall passengers will have to watch their heads when entering or exiting.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 4.9 |
Headroom is barely adequate, as is legroom if the front seats are pushed far back, especially in the middle seat. Entry and exit require some twisting for taller passengers.
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.8 |
At 17.7 cubic feet, the sedan's trunk is the largest in its class in terms of volume. Making use of that space can be tricky, though, as the wheel arches intrude into the cargo hold. The opening is not that large either, making loading of bulky items more difficult than it should be. Seat backs fold flat, but headrests will have to be removed if the front seats are moved too far back. Interior small-item storage is good.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | Premium | XFR | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 10 | 7 | 6.2 |
XF offers a fine balance of ride and handling along with impressive powertrain performance. XFR offers even more performance at a price considerably less than BMW M5 or Mercedes E63. For those wanting distinctive style and fresh, "gee-whiz" technological features, this Best Buy sedan should be near the top of your shopping list.
