ACCELERATION

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
8 8 8 8 7.4

G37's eager V6 engine satisfies at any speed. Passing maneuvers are a breeze. Manual-transmission coupes and convertibles are very quick. However, G37 coupe test cars suffered from touchy clutch take-up and balky shift action. The alert and responsive 7-speed automatic is what we would recommend, particularly on models with the Sport Package's paddle shifters.

FUEL ECONOMY

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
5 5 4 4 4.7

In Consumer Guide testing, AWD sedans averaged 22.0-23.6 mpg. Manual-transmission coupes averaged 20.0-20.1 mpg. A convertible with the automatic averaged just 14.6 mpg in all city driving. Given the available power, G37 fuel economy impresses. All G37 models require premium-grade gas.

RIDE QUALITY

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
5 4 5 4 6.5

All G37s lack the overall ride composure of top German rivals. There's no bounding or float, but large bumps resonate through the cabin on the G37S coupe. Some jiggle is evident on broken surfaces due to the sport suspension. The convertible's ride is more absorbent and compliant. Top up or down, the convertible has an impressively rigid body structure, with only a minimal degree of cowl shake noticed over larger bumps and fast corners.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
9 9 8 8 7.2

Among the best in this class. Coupes and sedans are grippy and agile, with little lean in corners. Steering feel is precise and direct. The available Four-Wheel Active-Steer System provides particularly sharp moves. The convertible has a solid body structure, but it's not as composed as the coupe or sedan. Braking is strong and secure.

QUIETNESS

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
6 5 6 5 7.2

The engine note is lusty in rapid acceleration. Both coupes and convertibles have a particularly sporty tone that may not appeal to all drivers. Road noise is evident on coarse surfaces, especially with the tires included on the G37 Sport. Wind noise is minimal in the coupe and more noticeable in the convertible model, but not terrible. The convertible's optional wind deflector does well quieting the cabin.

CONTROLS

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.5

G37 has a 7-inch dashboard screen with or without navigation, and many functions work through controls mounted horizontally below the screen. The navigation system itself is refreshingly easy to use, and many audio and climate functions are separate from it. The main gauge cluster moves with the tilt steering wheel. With the top down, a fair amount of glare obscures the driver's view of the gauge cluster in the convertible. The convertible's power-operated hardtop can be opened or closed from a stop in 28 seconds via a console button.

DETAILS

8 8 8 8 7.7

Cabin assembly quality and most interior materials are on target for the class, with real aluminum or wood trim available. Convertible-exclusive exterior color and interior materials packages add different types of wood and metal trim.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
8 6 7 7 7.4

Good overall room in sedans. Coupe headroom is tight, even for not-very-tall occupants, especially with the sunroof. Cushy seats are comfortable and supportive. The seats in Sport models have additional side bolstering to keep occupants planted in fast cornering. The convertible's cooled seats are an added comfort. Visibility is somewhat confined to the rear corners in coupes and convertibles, and is further hampered by the frame of the convertible's optional windscreen.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
5 2 1 1 5.2

Sedan versions are unimpressive for overall space. Headroom and legroom are just OK. In the coupe, the front seats power forward and back to ease entry and exit, but twisting is still required to enter the second row. Headroom is limited, as is legroom, even with the front seats moved well forward. Convertible's rear-seat room is tighter still and shrinks to non-existent when the optional windscreen is installed over the second row.

CARGO ROOM

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
3 2 1 1 3.9

Sedans have fairly small trunks, and only have a small center pass through for longer items. Coupes have a one-piece folding seatback, but the cargo area is small and very shallow. Convertibles don't have a standard spare tire and only a small, shallow area is open for cargo in the trunk when the top is down. Top up trunk space is greater, but still sacrifices a few cubic feet of space for the top mechanism; room greatly shrinks with the top down, so pack carefully. Interior small-item storage space is just fair.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

AWD G37x w/Sport Pkg G37S 6MT coupe G37 convertible, automatic G37 Sport 6MT convertible Class Average
9 7 8 8 6.6

G37's performance, space, and available all-wheel drive make it an excellent alternative to rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, especially with the addition of the hardtop convertible. These virtues, teamed with prices that undercut those rivals, make these Infinitis a must see in this category.
