With 14 extra hp versus 2009 models, CR-V feels snappier at all speeds. It's still no ball of fire compared with other compact rivals that offer V6 engines, but CR-V never leaves you wanting for power. The transmission is smooth and prompt.

CR-V is compact-car maneuverable and reasonably fun to drive. Body lean in fast turns is kept in check. The steering is nicely weighted, communicative, and accurate. The brakes provide very good stopping control.

Engine noise is intrusive during acceleration. Tire noise is noticeable on most road surfaces, but it's not annoying. Large exterior mirrors cause some wind rush to make its way into the cabin.

Headroom and legroom are plentiful. A comfortable, take-charge driving stance is aided by a standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel and generous seat travel. The seats are well bolstered, but some testers complain that they're too firm for optimal long-distance comfort. Entry and exit are very easy.

The supportive seat has a reclining backrest and can slide fore and aft to benefit passenger or cargo room. Space for legs and knees is plentiful, but the very tall will find headroom lacking. A flat floor makes three-abreast seating possible, though only for short trips. As in front, entry and exit are easy.

With the rear seats up, cargo space is generous. The rear seatbacks fold in a 40/20/40 configuration for added flexibility. They also fold and tumble forward in a 60/40 split, but in this arrangement, the seat must be held in place with an inconvenient clip. Interior storage is very good highlighted by a convenient dual glovebox. EX-L models have center console storage. Other versions have a less-convenient flip-up plastic tray between the front seats.

CR-V is not the most powerful compact SUV, but it excels for its "just-right" blend of comfort, refinement, passenger room, and cargo versatility. Lots of standard safety and convenience features and Honda's reputation for reliability and resale value further bolster its Best Buy appeal.
