The new Equinox is competent in every way. It excels with a quiet ride and well-executed interior. Those who haven't considered Equinox before should add it to their shopping list.

Quiz time kids! What has almost all the room of Chevy's out-going Trailblazer, but weighs almost half a ton less? If you guessed Equinox, you win five years of seriously reduced fuel bills. Avoid the pricey, complicated nav system and you have a roomy, attractive and refined ride. Check one out.

Forget the common wisdom on Chevy, the new Equinox is one of the best small crossovers. Our front-drive 4-cylinder-powered tester was refined, comfortable, roomy, quiet, and very practical with few vices popping up over about 225 miles of driving. The 2.4-liter Ecotec might be the smoothest 4-cylinder engine on the market, and in Equinox it is well matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission. With this combination, you'll pass by gas stations, but you won't win many stoplight grand prixs. But let's be realistic, this is 4-cylinder crossover, not a sport sedan. Add in a good-looking interior and decent road manners and you end up with a very strong entry in this ultra-competitive class.
Tom Appel
It's not as nimble as the CR-V, nor is it as strong with either engine as any RAV4, but Equinox is still worth a serious look for shoppers in this category. Credit Chevy's newest SUV with scads of passenger space and class-leading road and wind isolation.
