ACCELERATION

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
6 8 6.7

The 2.0T is strong from any speed, though it can be slow to respond to throttle inputs at highway speeds when equipped with the automatic transmission. S4 is stronger all-around; it isn't neck-snapping off the line, but delivers impressive acceleration once underway. S4's 7-speed automatic generally, delivers quick, crisp shifts, but may balk under certain circumstances.

FUEL ECONOMY

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
6 5 5.8

In Consumer Guide testing, a 2.0T sedan averaged 22.5 mpg with more city driving than highway use. Test S4 averaged 17.7 mpg in mostly city driving. Audi recommends premium-grade gas for all models.

RIDE QUALITY

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
7 5 5.4

A4 is impressively solid. The 2.0T sedans are generally supple and composed over just about every type of road surface. S4 is similarly composed, though its sport suspension and 18-inch wheels make for a stiffer ride over sharp bumps and rough pavement.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
7 8 7.3

True drivers' cars. Steering is nicely weighted and direct. A4 adeptly balances around-town maneuverability with sporty road manners. S4 has sharper moves all-around. One test S4 equipped with winter tires performed admirably in snowy conditions.

QUIETNESS

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
7 7 6

Road and wind noise is well muffled on all A4/S4 models. Though smooth overall, the 2.0T engine doesn't mach the overall refinement of Audi's or other German makers' 6-cylinder engines. S4's supercharged V6 emits a sporty, sophisticated growl that should please enthusiast drivers.

CONTROLS

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
5 5 6.2

The gauges are clear and well-lit. The dual-zone automatic climate system is a bit complex, and its controls are awkwardly low on the dashboard. Audi's MMI control system absorbs most audio and some climate functions, so it can be distracting. In all models, the front-center armrest blocks use of the handbrake lever and cupholders.

DETAILS

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
8 8 7.2

As expected from Audi, A4's cabin impresses for classy design, materials, and workmanship. S4's sport seats, steering wheel, and carbon-fiber trim add a suitably sporty vibe.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
7 7 6.8

The seats are firm and comfortable in both A4 and S4 models. Headroom and legroom are ample, though the center console steals enough knee space to annoy some drivers.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
4 4 3.7

Sedans have only adequate headroom, and legroom is tight behind taller drivers. The seat is supportive and nicely contoured so longer trips are more bearable.

CARGO ROOM

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
4 4 4

Sedans have a long but narrow trunk, but more actual space than most cars in this class. Cabin storage includes adequate and includes door map pockets, glove box, and small center console.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

AWD 2.0T sedan, automatic S4 sedan, automatic Class Average
8 7 5.9

All A4s are Recommended picks for being fun to drive and relatively good values when compared with other cars in the class. The 2.0T 4-cylinder engine delivers respectable acceleration and fuel efficiency, but lacks the smooth power delivery and premium feel of rival V6 engines. The enthusiast-oriented S4 commands a significant price premium, but delivers stronger overall performance, with the promise of a minimal fuel-economy penalty.
