Vehicle Highlights
The 2009 Volvo XC90 shuffles its model lineup. This premium midsize SUV offers seating for up to seven passengers. Four models are available. The 3.2 and new-for-2009 3.2 R-Design have a 235-hp 3.2-liter 6-cylinder engine. The V8 and new-for-2009 V8 R-Design have a 311-hp 4.4-liter V8. The Sport model has been dropped. All XC90s use a 6-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 3870 lb with the 6-cylinder and 4960 lb with the V8. All-wheel drive is standard on V8 models and optional for the 6-cylinder. All 3.2 versions have standard front-wheel drive. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Standard on the V8 and 3.2 R-Design and optional on the 3.2 is a 3rd-row seat; included with it is a load-leveling suspension. XC90's 40/20/40 split 2nd-row bench is available with an integrated child booster seat. Steering-linked bi-xenon headlamps are optional, as is Volvo's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) designed to detect and warn of unseen objects nearby. Rear-obstacle detection and a navigation system are also available. Leather upholstery is standard on the 3.2 R-Design and V8 and optional on the 3.2. Standard for all models is an auto-dimming rearview mirror. V8 models are available with a new Executive Package, which includes upgraded upholstery, heated and cooled front seats with massage, and specific trim.
COMPETITION
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.
Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
New or significantly redesigned models include the Infiniti FX and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The Chrysler Aspen adds a gas/electric hybrid model, and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and R-Class add a new diesel powerplant, as does the Volkswagen Touareg 2.
