The XC70 is a good alternative to an SUV. However, with options it becomes expensive. If you don't need AWD, the lighter, less expensive V70 is a better alternative.

The base-sticker difference between the base XC70 and the T6 version isn't much ($2250), and even then the T6 starts at $39,500. That's not bad for a comfortable, roomy, and versatile car. However, many of the popular niceties are available only in big-ticket option packages that may give the more cost-conscious buyer in this segement pause.

My only beef here is that this fine car costs $12,000 more than the wonderful V70, and doesn't seem $12,000 better. You need the XC to get AWD these days, and though the move to the T6 isn't strictly necessary, the added power is nice. In the market for a $45,000 wagon? This is a good one. Check out the high-value V70 first, though. You may find it's plenty good enough.
