Vehicle Highlights
The 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 makes news by offering a new diesel engine as well as a new high-end trim package. This five-passenger 4-door wagon comes with all-wheel drive. The 3.6-liter V6 model has 280 hp, the 4.2-liter V8 model has 350. New for 2009 is the TDI, which has a 221-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel. This will replace the previously available V10 turbodiesel. All Touareg 2s have a 6-speed automatic transmission. Their AWD system is designed for off-roading and includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential; a locking rear differential is optional. Maximum towing capacity is 7716 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Standard features include a power liftgate, power driver seat, and front- and rear-obstacle detection. Leather upholstery is optional on the V6 and TDI and standard on V8. Options include keyless entry and starting, navigation system and rearview camera. 19-inch wheels are standard on V8 models. New for mid-2009 is the Lux Limited, which includes specific interior trim, 20-inch wheels, two-tone leather upholstery, and 12-way power front seats. Lux Limited is available with V6 and V8 engines. Touareg 2 was developed with Porsche, which offers its own version as the Cayenne. Touareg 2 also lends its basic design to the Audi Q7 premium large SUV.
COMPETITION
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.
Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
New or significantly redesigned models include the Infiniti FX and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The Chrysler Aspen adds a gas/electric hybrid model, and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and R-Class add a new diesel powerplant, as does the Volkswagen Touareg 2.
