Most Volkswagens impress immediately as being a step above their class in refinement and dynamic feel, and this Jetta wagon was no exception. Although our test SE had a navigation system, panoramic sunroof, and 17-inch alloy wheels that helped push its price past $26,000, a nicely equipped base S model lacking those features--none of which I'd miss--lists for just over $20,000. So add the Jetta wagon to a long list of Volkswagens that come off as very impressive values with a disheartening reliability record.

Cute, classy, and not too thirsty. Sure, the engine's a wee crude for a German car, and the sticker price is kinda high. But this refined wagon sports a near-luxury interior, restrained good looks, and wont be popular enough to become common. Skip the 17-inch wheels and a few more options and you can keep this cargo hauler under $25,000.
