Only turbocharged Impreza models have been made available for testing. 2.5GT is a bit sluggish from a stop, but speed picks up nicely at higher rpm. The transition where the turbo kicks in is smooth and linear, so we're hesitant to call it "turbo lag." Despite having only four speeds, the automatic transmission is a good match for the engine. Lag is evident on both the WRX and WRX STi, but those models are very strong above 3500 rpm. While STi models tested have a smooth shifter and clutch, test WRX models are rubbery and vague.

In Consumer Guide testing, a 2.5GT averaged 22.9 mpg. A WRX averaged 24.2 mpg in mostly highway driving. An STi averaged 21.0 mpg. Turbocharged models require premium-grade gas. Non-turbo versions use regular.

2.5GT and WRX are pleasantly supple over most bumps, surprising given their sporty intentions. STi is expectedly firm and occasionally jarring over bumps. It's never outright harsh, though.

Steering feel is responsive, if not as razor sharp as would be expected in a sporty car. Body lean in turns is moderate, and dry-pavement grip is excellent. The STi's moves are more finely honed. Stopping control is very good on all models.

WRX and STi's turbocharged engines whine under full throttle, but they're more relaxed at cruising speeds. The 2.5GT's engine has less turbo noise, but its overall sound is not as refined as class pacesetters. The hatchback is particularly susceptible to wind, road, and bump noise.

The climate controls are within easy reach and are clearly marked. The audio system is mounted high on the center of the dashboard, and it puts some controls just out of easy reach. The available navigation system absorbs most audio functions. This slightly complicates their use, but redundant steering-wheel controls help. The navigation system itself is easy to negotiate.

Subaru is aiming for an upscale image with the Impreza's interior design. While the materials look nice and show good assembly quality, they're comprised mainly of cheap-feeling plastic. STi's specific trim is appropriately sporty, though materials quality falls well short of its lofty asking price.

Six-footers have good headroom and legroom. The WRX and STi's sport bucket seats have good side bolstering but not enough lumbar support to make them comfortable for long trips. Visibility is excellent all around.

Overall room is decent for the class. Six-footers will fit in back, but they'll have barely adequate legroom and knee space. Foot space is good, though. Entry and exit are fine for a compact car.

Hatchbacks are versatile little haulers with good space behind the rear seats. The rear seatbacks don't fold flat with the cargo floor, and the headrests may have to be removed if the front seats are set far back. Interior storage is poor with a small center console and just average glovebox and door map pockets.

Turbocharged Impreza models offer quick acceleration and solid handling, abetted by their standard all-wheel drive. The WRX STi is faster still, but its raucous nature limits its appeal to serious driving enthusiasts only. While turbo hatchbacks are quite practical, they suffer from copious road and wind noise. All Imprezas have middling interior materials, and turbocharged versions have steep pricing. Though at a significant power disadvantage, the non-turbo Impreza 2.5i is far more reasonably priced, yet still offers a lot of convenience and safety features.
