Nissan's boxy new subcompact one-ups its Scion xB and Kia Soul rivals in terms of quirky, off-the-wall styling cues. For many shoppers, that might not be a good thing. Those who enjoy (or can at least tolerate) cube's intentionally unconventional looks will be rewarded with a highly practical, economical subcompact wagon with surprising passenger space and surprisingly pleasant road manners. Competitive pricing is another plus.

Much is sacrificed--both inside and out--for "style," but the cube is a versatile vehicle with enjoyable dynamics and a complete complement of modern safety equipment at a bargain price.

Fun to look at, easy to drive and cheap to buy, Cube may only be the latest kute kube, but it is also the most compelling. This tidy, well-designed package makes all sorts of good sense for folks not desperate for power or luxury. I found the slick shifter and precise clutch added much to my appreciation for this wonder vanlet.
