ACCELERATION

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
3 5

The V6 engine is underpowered for anything but daily commuting and light loads.

FUEL ECONOMY

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
4 3.5

No opportunity to measure a Raider, but a similar V6 Dakota averaged 20.2 mpg in Consumer Guide testing. Raider uses regular-grade gas.

RIDE QUALITY

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
5 4.6

Smooth and composed in any configuration. There's little of the bounding and jiggle typical of the class.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
3 3.8

Steering has a direct feel and lacks typical truck sloppiness. Body lean is evident in turns but is well-controlled for a pickup.

QUIETNESS

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
5 4.5

Road noise is impressively hushed. Some wind rush is evident at highway speeds. Well-muted engines sound refined in rapid acceleration.

CONTROLS

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
5 5.9

Controls are logically placed and readily accessed. Large gauges are easy to read.

DETAILS

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
4 4.5

Interior materials look and feel low grade. Hard, shiny plastic covers most surfaces, and some controls lack quality feel.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
7 5.7

The extended cab's spacious cabin has plenty of headroom and legroom. The front bench seat will accommodate three passengers in a pinch.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
2 2.7

The extended cab's available forward-facing jump seats best suit those under 5-ft-3, as there's little leg room. Wide-opening, rear-hinged doors make for easier loading in tight spaces.

CARGO ROOM

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
4 3.9

Ample center-console and door-pocket storage. Folding rear seats add to the extended cab's utility.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LS Ext. Cab, automatic Class Average
2 6

Any Raider is best suited to light-duty chores, but its large dimensions render it too big for easy daily commuting. Mitsubishi offers more generous warranty coverage than its Dodge Dakota sibling, but is hampered by a spottier dealer network and uncertain resale value. Also, Raider's lack of key safety features such as an antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and even four-wheel ABS makes this truck difficult to recommend.
