Lancer GTS is fun to drive, but there are cars just as entertaining that have better rides and engine notes.
Jennifer Geiger
This test Lancer GTS was too pricey for the cheapness and coarseness it exuded. GTS is a budget-grade car concealed in a sporty shell. At over $23,000 a more refined, sporty compact can be had.
Rick Cotta
The best Lancer would be a combination not offered: an ES with the 2.4. As it is, the $2000 bump for the GTS brings the better engine, but also signs you up for the annoyingly stiff suspension and vision-stealing rear spoiler. In any guise south of the Evo, the Lancer looks sportier than it is, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the car itself came anywhere close to Civic goodness.
Tom Appel
I'm with Rick here. The best possible Lancer can't be had. A base-suspension car with the 2.4-liter and a manual transmission might just make this car worth a look. As it stands, the GTS, especially hobbled by this contrarian CVT, is just a rough riding, over-equipped entry in a very competitive segment. Were it not for the EVO models, no one would talk about this car.
