The 2009 Mitsubishi Galant is one of those cars that seems to be perfectly OK, and in this class there is a handful of cars that can't clear that bar. But this class has some great entries, and I can't place this Mitsubishi in that group.

In its present form, if this car were available in 2005, it would be pretty easy to recommend. It's good looking, sporty to drive, and surprisingly fuel efficient, given the size of the engine and its power. Since that time, however, the competition, both foreign and domestic, has become so much better that Galant is little more than an also-ran. It's an OK car, but OK isn't good enough in this segment.

Although not as refined as some competitors, the Galant with its sporty exhaust note and styling stands out in the staid midsize market.

Galant is a solid midsize sedan in many ways, but there are so many good cars in this class that being average won't really get it very far. The Ralliart model adds extra sportiness in the styling and horsepower department, but watch the bottom line. Our tester was $29,400 and requires premium fuel. I'd like this car more if it was equipped with a telescoping steering wheel and 60/40 split-folding rear seats and had a tighter turning circle.

The Gallant Ralliart¿s price tag is tempting enough for a car of this size and power. The car used for this test stickered for $29,424 delivered, and that included the optional navigation package. But there's little in its materials or driving characteristics that will make you feel it's a superior value even at that price.
