Vehicle Highlights

The 2009 Mazda 6 is redesigned, gaining size, freshened styling, and more power. This midsize car now comes exclusively as a 4-door sedan; the previous hatchback and wagon body styles are discontinued. The 2009 6 is about 4 inches longer in wheelbase and 7 inches longer overall than the 2003-2008 generation. Four trim levels are available: SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Models with the "i" designation receive a new 170-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine; it replaces a 156-hp 2.3-liter 4-cylinder. Models with the "s" prefix get a 272-hp 3.7-liter V6, which replaces a 212-hp 3.0 V6. A 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission is offered with the 4-cylinder, while the V6 pairs with a 6-speed automatic. Both automatics have manual shift capability. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Optional equipment includes a navigation system, leather upholstery, keyless entry, a sunroof, and a blind-spot monitoring system. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 5, Saturn Aura, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Prius.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Mitsubishi Galant, and Nissan Maxima.
