Few cars mix daily-driver practicality and sporty-car giggles as well as the Mazda 3. Non-Mazdaspeed models like this s Grand Touring aren't particularly quick, but with the 3's quick steering and smooth-shifting 5-speed manual, they're still loads of fun.

Mazda 3 is a very likable compact, and probably one of the strongest competitors in the class, but gas mileage is unimpressive for a compact and is the main demerit against the little Mazda.
Jennifer Geiger
The compact class is full of good cars to choose from and the Mazda 3 tops the list for me. Its hatchback body style offers a great blend of sport, utility, and overall economy.
Rick Cotta
It's pricier than most rivals, but the Mazda3 s hatchback's sporty moves--along with an oh-so-right mix of comfort, utility, and economy--make it the car-lover's pick of the compact class.
