2009 Jaguar XF Full Review
Date Published: 8/26/08
2009 Jaguar XF Sneak Peek
The 2009 Jaguar XF replaces the S-Type as this British automaker's premium midsize car. Three trim levels are offered: Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Supercharged. All have a 4.2-liter V8 engine. Luxury and Premium Luxury have 300 hp, while Supercharged versions have 420 hp. All use a 6-speed automatic transmission with "JaguarDrive Selector," which uses a rotary knob for gear selection. The transmission also includes steering wheel paddles for manual gear changes. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. A navigation system with voice control is standard on Premium Luxury and Supercharged models and optional on the Luxury model. The system allows passengers to also record voice messages for playback at a later time. Rear-obstacle detection is standard, and front-obstacle detection is available. Also available are a rearview camera, three levels of audio systems, a blind-spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, and JaguarSense--a system that uses touch/proximity sensors to detect when an occupant wants to open the glovebox or activate the overhead interior lights.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 8 7.2

The non-supercharged V8 is satisfying quick at any speed. The Supercharged is faster still. No opportunity for us to time, but Jaguar claims 6.2 seconds 0-60 mph for non-supercharged models and 5.1 for the Supercharged. Both estimates are credible. The transmission provides smooth, fast shifts with either engine.
Fuel Economy

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
5 4 4.6

In Consumer Guide testing, a Premium Luxury averaged 18.2 mpg. A test Supercharged averaged 17.9 mpg. Jaguar recommends premium-grade gas for both engines.
Ride Quality

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 6 6

With its 19-inch wheels, the Premium Luxury is generally comfortable, though rippled roads induce nervous wheel patter. It also tends to thump over sharp bumps. Supercharged has 20-inch wheels, which are fidgety over bumps, with pronounced side-to-side motions.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 7 7

Both Premium Luxury and Supercharged corner with good grip and little body lean. Supercharged is slightly sharper in fast cornering, but the tires' stiff sidewalls tend to follow every groove and crown in the road. Steering is well weighted and precise. Brakes are strong, but on one test car were touchy.
Quietness

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 7 6.7

Wind rush and mechanical noise are well muted. Both V8s have a pleasant growl under acceleration, but cruise quietly. Wheel patter can intrude on some surfaces.
Controls

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 7 6.7

Gauges are unobstructed. Give Jaguar credit for eschewing a control-knob interface (a la Audi and BMW) in favor of a touch screen for most audio and climate functions. Still, many simple tasks require several "virtual button" presses, though redundant controls on the steering wheel help.
Details

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
9 9 7.4

Quality wood, leather, and aluminum, with an abundance of padded surfaces contribute to an upscale ambiance. JaguarSense is an interesting novelty, as is the rotary-knob transmission gear selector.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
7 7 7.2

Though not ample, space is adequate for most adults. A standard power tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps drivers find a comfortable position. The seats are comfortable with good support.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
4 4 4.9

Headroom is barely adequate, as is legroom if the front seats are pushed far back. Entry and exit require some twisting for taller passengers.
Cargo Room

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
4 4 4.1

At 17.7 cu ft, the sedan's trunk is the largest in its class. Seatbacks fold flat, but headrests will have to be removed if the front seats are moved too far back. Interior small-item storage is good.
Value within Class

Premium Luxury Supercharged Class Average
6 6 6

The XF trades the retro styling of its S-Type predecessor for something edgier. It offers a fine balance of ride and handling along with impressive powertrain performance. For those wanting distinctive style and fresh, "gee-whiz" technological features, this Jaguar is worth a look.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Jaguar XF 4-door sedan
Coming soon. Please check back for more information and Consumer Guide's full review.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive. There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.

From The Back Seat
Damon Bell One of the many challenges facing Jaguar these days is the need for fresh, cutting-edge styling that retains the marque's unique character and history. Though many might disagree with me, I think the new XF achieves that goal. The XF is much more striking in person than photographs suggest, and its impeccable interior bristles with many "surprise and delight" features that give the car a personality all its own. My gripes with this Supercharged model include the sometimes fidgety ride (blame the extremely low-profile 20-inch tires) and the convoluted touch screen controls that divert too much attention from the road. Grievances aside, I think Jaguar has a solid premium-midsize contender here.

John Biel If you can live without 420 horsepower in your Jaguar, you can have a really worthwhile car in the $50,000s in the XF. However, the extra coin asked for the top-end model driven in this test buys a lot more than just a supercharger for the V8, so it seems like a good value for those who CAN'T live without 420 horsepower.

Tom Appel With the XF, Jaguar has traded character for marketability. Where the out-going S-Type was elegantly traditional (some might say dated) the XF looks decidedly fresh, if not especially Jaguar-like. Still, apart from a small-for-the-class cabin, this is a fine car. The interior is nicely appointed, the powertrain refined, and the console refreshingly free of excess switchgear or some God-awful interface system (think i-drive, MMI, COMAND). The XF has the unenviable task of saving Jaguar; luckily it's really very good.
