ACCELERATION
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.8 |
Best performance requires liberal shifting at any speed. That's no problem with the slick, short-throw shifter and not-too-heavy clutch. S2000 provides a surprising supply of usable power across a broad rpm range, combined with ultra-high-revving excitement. No S2000 CR models have been made available for testing.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.2 |
In Consumer Guide testing, we averaged 24.6 mpg in mostly highway driving. S2000 requires premium-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.2 |
S2000 is a small, light, and stiffly sprung sports car, so nearly every small bump and tar strip registers through the seats. It's never brutally harsh, though. Solid construction means almost imperceptible body quiver typically associated with convertibles.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 10 | 8.2 |
Nimble and precise, with terrific cornering balance and virtually no body lean. Impressive straight-line tracking. Braking is swift, with excellent pedal modulation.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.3 |
Top down, noise is unobjectionable. Top up, tire roar is the main annoyance. Its screaming engine note never gets old.
CONTROLS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.6 |
Everything is close at hand, mainly due to its cozy cockpit. The audio unit is mounted a bit low, but redundant controls for major functions flank the steering wheel. An electronic bar-graph tachometer and digital speedometer are not the sports-car norm but are easy to read.

Materials are solid and show Honda-typical assembly quality. The power top operates quickly and seals well.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 5.5 |
Large folks have precious little room to spare, so they might find the seats too confining. A tall transmission tunnel adds to the cozy feel. Entry and exit are crouch-and-crawl affairs. Top-up visibility is not great over the shoulder but is better than in many rivals.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1.4 |
(No rear seating.)
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 2.8 |
Pack light. The trunk holds a fair number of plastic grocery bags or a couple of day packs. Interior storage is modest.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS

It's a bit stiff riding and noisy, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a little more practical and a lot less costly. The spicy S2000 beats the comparably powered Pontiac Solstice GXP for refinement and overall motoring fun. It even rivals the far more expensive Porsche Boxster.
