Honda's re-done 2009 Pilot is in the same boat as the 2008 Accord. It has some meaningful improvements in that it's more comfortable, quieter, and seemingly more fuel efficient. It's also taken a couple steps back with its button-happy control scheme, lackluster interior materials, and blockier styling. Like Accord, Pilot no longer stands alone at the head of its class. It deserves a place on your shopping list, but don't sign until you've also driven rivals such as the GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander, or even the Ford Flex.

The new Pilot¿s combination of comfort, features, and performance make it easy to like in a hurry.

It's not a "given" these days that a redesigned vehicle is going to be better than the one it replaced, but as good as the old Pilot was, this one is better. If you need something this big--or something that can seat eight people--the Pilot merits a top spot on your shopping list.

I'm very disappointed by what appears to be Honda's indifferent attention to cabin materials and assembly quality. That said, Pilot is still a top-rung ride, with useful power, a smooth drivetrain, and car-like handling. The Pilot replaces the old Pilot on the short list of cars I would buy for my family.
