Vehicle Highlights

The 2009 GMC Acadia lineup gains more available power and a few new features. This crossover SUV shares its basic design with the Chevrolet Traverse, Saturn Outlook, and premium-midsize Buick Enclave. SLE and SLT models are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The only available powertrain is a 288-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2009 Acadia makes 13 hp more than 2008 models. Eight-passenger seating comes via a 2nd-row bench seat in place of buckets. Available safety equipment includes ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Available features include a "skyscape" dual sunroof with a large tilt and slide front panel and a fixed rear glass skylight. Newly available for 2009 are a wireless cell phone link, heated and cooled front seats, and satellite radio with real-time traffic updates. A rearview camera is available on any Acadia, whether or not it's equipped with the optional navigation system.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choices are the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, and Saturn Outlook. Our Recommended picks are the Dodge Journey, Ford Flex, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Journey, Ford Flex, Kia Borrego, Nissan Murano, and Toyota Venza. The Hummer H3 adds a crew-cab pickup truck bodystyle for 2009, while the Dodge Durango adds a gas/electric hybrid model.
