Vehicle Highlights

The 2009 Ford F-Series Super Duty gets several new technology options. Available are the items in Ford Work Solutions, a set of technologies that include an in-dash computer with broadband Internet access, a fleet-management system, a cable-lock system to secure items in the bed, and a tool-inventory system. Also newly optional is Ford's Sync voice-activated control interface for cell phones and MP3 players, voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic information, and a spray-in bedliner.

Mainstream Super Duty models include 3/4-ton F-250 and 1-ton F-350. The line also offers F-450, 550, and 650 versions. Most models are offered in the following trim levels: XL, XLT, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, and special-edition Cabela's and Harley-Davidson. Depending on chassis selection, Super Duty trucks offer regular cabs, extended SuperCabs, and 4-door crew cabs. All are available with an 8-foot cargo bed. The SuperCab and crew cab are available with a 6.75-foot bed as well. The F-250 has single rear wheels; the F-350 has single- or dual-rear wheels; the F-450 has dual-rear wheels.

A 300-hp 5.4-liter V8 engine is standard on most models. Standard or optional, depending on chassis/cab configuration is a 362-hp 6.8-liter V10. Also offered is a 350-hp 6.4-liter turbodiesel V8. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, and a 5-speed automatic is optional. All except the FX4 are available with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that should not be left engaged on dry pavement but includes a low-range gear for off-road use. FX4 models are 4WD only. Super Duty towing capacities range from 8100 lb to 24600 lb when properly equipped.

Available safety features include ABS and traction control. Among the available features are a stowable bed extender, retractable tailgate step, power-folding and telescopic side mirrors, and a rearview camera. Lariat, King Ranch, Cabela's and Harley-Davidson models have specific trim. A sunroof and rear-obstacle detection are optional on most models.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Pickup Trucks are traditionally the vehicles of choice for heavy-duty hauling and towing. They offer an array of cab styles and bed lengths and usually feature powerful V8 or diesel engines. For personal use, consider light-duty half-ton models. For heavy-duty or commercial use, consider three-quarter- or one-ton models.

Our Best Buys are the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150. Our Recommended picks are the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Toyota Tundra. New or significantly redesigned models in the class include the Dodge Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 each add a gas/electric hybrid model for 2009.
