2009 E85 Vehicle Lineup
| CARS |
![]() Class: Large Car Price Range: $28,415 - $39,315 Engines: 227-horsepower 3.9-liter V6, 292-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 3.9 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/26 3.9 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 13/20 4.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 15/22 The 2009 Buick Lucerne gets a new V6 engine and more standard features. Depending on trim level, a 227-horsepower 3.9-liter V6 or a 292-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 engine are available. The 3.9-liter V6 is capable of running on E85 fuel. Lucerne occupies a middle ground between the flamboyant Chrysler 300 and the conservative Toyota Avalon, with the well-appointed CXL offering the most value for the money. The costlier but still reasonably priced Super is tempting for its better ride control and added power from its V8 engine. |
![]() Class: Compact Car Price Range: $17,930 - $24,150 Engine: 155-horsepower 2.2-liter 4-cylinder, 172-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, 250-horsepower, 260-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 2.0 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, manual trans.): 21/29 2.0 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, auto trans.): 19/29 2.2 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, manual): 22/32 2.2 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (E85, manual): 16/23 2.2 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, automatic): 22/30 2.2 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (E85, automatic): 16/22 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, 260 horsepower, manual): 21/30 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (E85, 260 horsepower, manual): 16/22 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, 250 horsepower, automatic): 22/29 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (E85, 250 horsepower, automatic): 15/21 The 2009 Chevrolet HHR lineup receives a host of changes, including more standard power, the ability to run on E85 fuel, and some new features. HHR's 2.2-liter and 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engines are now capable of running on E85. Chevrolet's retro-flavored wagon offers a practical blend of look-at-me style and utility in a not-too-large package. Pricing and features availability are competitive, too. The utilitarian Panel will appeal mostly to commercial customers and folks looking for a rolling commercial. The SS is an affordable, practical hot-rod wagon. |
![]() Class: Midsize Car Price Range: $21,255 - $28,235 Engines: 211-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, 224-horsepower 3.9-liter V6, 303-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 3.5 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 19/29 3.5 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 14/22 3.9 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/27 3.9 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 13/20 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/24 The 2009 Chevrolet Impala is largely unchanged. Both V6 engines are capable of running on E85 fuel. Chevrolet's top-selling car is affordable, relatively roomy, and has competent road manners. But this sedan still feels dated compared with class leaders. |
![]() Class: Midsize Car Price Range: $18,690 - $32,055 Engine: 173-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, 186-horsepower 2.7-liter V6, 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 21/30 2.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 18/26 2.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 12/19 3.5 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/27 The 2009 Chrysler Sebring loses its all-wheel-drive model. Sebring is available as either a 4-door sedan or 2-door convertible. The 2.7-liter V6 is E85 capable. Sebring's prices are attractive but all versions lack the powertrain refinement and interior roominess of the best in this class. The convertible appeals for its choice of a soft top or the all-weather security of a power-retractable hard top, and it is a reasonable alternative to rival droptops. |
![]() Class: Midsize Car Price Range: $18,590 - $25,270 Engine: 173-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, 186-horsepower 2.7-liter V6, 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 2.4 4-cylinder EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 21/30 2.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 19/27 2.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 13/20 3.5 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/27 The 2009 Dodge Avenger lineup loses its all-wheel-drive model. Otherwise, this midsize sedan is largely unchanged following its introduction for the 2008 model year. The 2.7-liter V6 is E85 capable. Avenger disappoints with crude drivetrain behavior, unsophisticated road feel, and budget-grade cabin appointments. These demerits are offset somewhat by aggressive pricing on base models, though loaded top-line versions can get quite pricey. Any number of class competitors deserve a higher spot on your shopping list. |
![]() Class: Large Car Price Range: $45,815 - $51,485 Engine: 239-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 4.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/24 4.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 12/17 Town Car is the only American-brand premium large sedan with rear-wheel drive. A 239-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 is the sole engine available, and is E85 capable. Town Car blends old-school American luxury, space, and isolation with surprisingly good road manners, all things considered. Cadillac's rival DTS is a far newer design with better performance and handling, but this elderly Lincoln still makes sense to some buyers. |
![]() Class: Premium Compact Car Price Range: $31,200 - $36,500 Engine: 228-horsepower 3.0-liter V6, 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, 451-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 3.0 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/25 3.0 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 13/19 3.5 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/25 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/25 The 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class should see no major changes following its 2008 redesign. C300s with automatic transmission are E85 capable. Within the confines of its compact dimensions, C-Class acquits itself quite well. C63 excepted, others in this segment trump all C-Class models for all-out performance, but buyers seeking brand cachet and a refined driving experience would do well to check out this newest version of Mercedes' entry-level sedan. |
![]() Class: Large Car Price Range: $25,435 - $28,425 Engine: 224-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 4.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/24 4.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 12/17 The 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis gains additional standard equipment. A 224-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 is the sole engine available and is E85 capable. Grand Marquis is a nice enough big sedan, but suffers from a basic design that dates back to the 1980s. We prefer the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger, and Mercury's own Sable as more-modern, more-satisfying choices in this class. |
| MINIVANS |
![]() Class: Minivan Price Range: $22,460 - $35,670 Engine: 175-horsepower 3.3-liter V6, 197-horsepower 3.8-liter V6, 251-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 3.3 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/24 3.3 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 11/16 3.8 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/23 4.0 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/25 The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country receives new safety features and other minor updates after its redesign for 2008. Its 3.3-liter V6 is E85 capable. The Town & Country boasts all the space, functionality, and available power a minivan shopper could want. Along with the Grand Caravan from sister division Dodge, these vans may not be as sporty as the Honda Odyssey or as well-appointed as the Toyota Sienna, but neither of those matches the T&C's and Caravan's blend of family-friendly attributes and dollar value. |
![]() Class: Minivan Price Range: $21,740 - $26,805 Engine: 175-horsepower 3.3-liter V6, 197-horsepower 3.8-liter V6, 251-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 3.3 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/24 3.3 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 11/16 3.8 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 16/23 4.0 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 17/25 The 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan lineup gains some new available features. Its 3.3-liter V6 is E85 capable. Grand Caravan is tailor-made for families with a need for space and a desire for comfort. Along with Town & Country from sister division Chrysler, these vans hit the bull's eye. While the Honda Odyssey may be sportier, and the interior of the Toyota Sienna more refined, neither matches the T&C's and Grand Caravan's blend of room, functionality, and dollar value. |
| SUVs |
![]() Class: Premium Large SUV Price Range: $58,740 - $64,885 Engine: 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8/electric 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 12/19 (2WD), 12/19 (4WD) 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/14 (2WD), 9/14 (4WD) 6.0 V8/electric EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 20/21 (2WD) The 2009 Cadillac Escalade lineup gains a gas/electric hybrid model. Otherwise, this premium large SUV gains a few new features for 2009. A 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine is the sole gasoline engine available and is E85 capable. Hybrid vehicles use a 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8. Escalade wagons are basically GMC Yukon Denalis, and Escalade EXTs are basically Chevrolet Avalanches, with Cadillac looks, and add a pinch more power, extra standard features, and higher prices. All of GM's large SUVs are solid choices in their market segments. Although Escalade wagons may not be worth every penny of their extra cost over the Denali, they are strong competitors in the premium large SUV class. The Hybrid model's price premium may seem steep, but so are the fuel economy savings. This premium large SUV can achieve the fuel economy of a midsize car with no sacrifice in passenger or cargo capacity. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $37,380 - $42,475 Engine: 310-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, 366-horsepower 6.0-liter V8, 352-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/20 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/15 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) 6.0 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, 352-366 horsepower): 14/19 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban makes news by offering a new 6-speed automatic transmission as well as additional safety and luxury features. The 5.3-liter V8 is E85 capable, and uses GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. For smooth power, utility, and surprising overall refinement, these are first-rate trucks. A carefully optioned LT is the best choice in the Suburban lineup, and is a strong value among large SUVs. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $35,370 - $53,260 Engine: 295-horsepower 4.8-liter V8, 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8/electric 4.8 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/20 (2WD), 14/20 (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/15 (2WD), 10/15 (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, XFE package): 15/21 (2WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85, XFE package): 11/16 (2WD) 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 12/19 (2WD), 12/19 (4WD) 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/14 (2WD), 9/14 (4WD) 6.0 V8/electric EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 21/22 (2WD), 20/20 (4WD) The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe gets a new 6-speed automatic transmission as well as additional safety and luxury features. The 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s are E85 capable, and the 5.3 uses GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. Hybrid vehicles use a 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 that pairs with an electric motor. Third-row accommodations are still best suited to children, but for smooth power, utility, and surprising overall refinement, Tahoe is a must see among large SUVs. The Hybrid model's premium may seem sharp, but so are the fuel economy savings. This large SUV can achieve the fuel economy of a midsize car with no sacrifice in passenger or cargo capacity. |
![]() Class: Premium Midsize SUV Price Range: $34,230 - $44,770 Engine: 303-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, 335-horsepower 5.7-liter V8, 385-horsepower 5.7-liter V8/electric 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD), 13/18 (4WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/13 (2WD), 9/12 (4WD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 13/19 (2WD), 13/18 (4WD) 5.7 V8/electric EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 19/20 (AWD) The 2009 Chrysler Aspen gets a new gas/electric Hybrid model and more available power. The 4.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. Hybrid vehicles use a 385-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 that pairs with an electric motor. Aspen may appear little more than a dressed-up Dodge Durango, but reduced noise levels and markedly upscale cabin trim make it a more enjoyable vehicle. Aspen's reasonable pricing means it doesn't cost much more than a comparably equipped Durango. The Hybrid gives up little towing capacity and no passenger space to its conventional sibling. However, it lacks smooth throttle response and suspension sophistication that one would expect in a premium-class vehicle. Shoppers who can use the towing and hauling utility of a traditional SUV, but don't covet the mass of a Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator would be best served by looking at a conventional Aspen. |
![]() Class: Midsize SUV Price Range: $26,455 - $37,215 Engine: 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, 303-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, 356-horsepower 5.7-liter V8, 385-horsepower 5.7-liter V8/electric 3.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD), 13/17 (4WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/13 (2WD), 9/12 (4WD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline):13/19 (2WD), 13/18 (4WD) 5.7 V8/electric EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 19/20 (AWD) The 2009 Dodge Durango gets a new gas/electric Hybrid model. The 4.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. Hybrid vehicles use a 385-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 that pairs with an electric motor. Durango matches some large SUVs for space and towing capacity. Unfortunately, it matches them for poor fuel economy, at least on conventional models. Hybrid models promise much better mileage at little expense to towing capability, but they lack smooth throttle response and suspension sophistication. Those deficits, combined with its stiffer price tag, make the Hybrid a tough sell. A conventional V8 Durango is the best choice in this lineup. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $30,620 - $45,515 Engine: 310-horsepower 5.4-liter V8 5.4 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/20 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) 5.4 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/14 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) The 2009 Ford Expedition adds the ability to run on E85 fuel, more power, and a few new features. Only one engine, the 310-horsepower 5.4-liter V8, is available and it is E85 capable. Expedition is an excellent vehicle for those who genuinely need the power and space of a large truck-type SUV. Interior materials trail those of some competitors, but for useful power, cargo space, passenger room, and surprisingly adept handling, this Ford is a Best Buy pick. Lincoln's Navigator dresses Expedition in flashier duds and elevates cabin ambiance with some real wood and nicer leather. The Lincoln offers nothing else of substance over its Ford sibling, and Navigator costs more. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $36,455 - $54,655 Engine: 295-horsepower 4.8-liter V8, 310-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, 352-horsepower 6.0-liter V8, 366-horsepower 6.0-liter V8, 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8/electric 4.8 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, Yukon): 14/19 (2WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/20 (2WD), 14/20 (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/15 (2WD), 10/15 (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, Yukon XFE package): 15/21 (2WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85, Yukon XFE package): 11/16 (2WD) 6.0 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, 352-366 horsepower): 14/19 (2WD), 12/17 (4WD) 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 12/19 (2WD), 12/19 (4WD) 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/14 (2WD), 9/14 (4WD) 6.0 V8/electric EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 21/22 (2WD), 20/20 (4WD) The 2009 GMC Yukon lineup gains a new 6-speed automatic transmission, while the high-end Denali models gain power and new features. The 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 are E85 capable, and the 5.3 V8 uses GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. Four-wheel-drive Yukon XL exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in the EPA fuel-economy program. Hybrid vehicles use a 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 that pairs with an electric motor. Yukon is pitched as an upscale alternative to Chevrolet's Tahoe, and the Denali is positioned just below Cadillac's Escalade. Despite having more power and luxury touches than Yukons, Denali doesn't deliver enough of either to justify its higher price range and thirst for premium-grade gas. A carefully optioned Yukon SLE or SLT are the best values in this GMC lineup. |
![]() Class: Premium large SUV Price Range: $59,395 - $60,900 Engine: 393-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): H2 exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program 6.2 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): H2 exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program The 2009 Hummer H2 adds the ability to run on E85 fuel. Only one engine, the 393-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, is available and it is E85 capable. Hummer's biggest model is incredibly capable off-road and reasonably well-behaved on-road. Impressive towing capacity adds to the package. For shoppers uncomfortable with Hummer's aggressive styling and with few off-road aspirations, any number of large trucks match the H2's overall utility and trump it for passenger space and fuel economy. |
![]() Class: Midsize SUV Price Range: $27,415 - $43,850 Engine: 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, 305-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, 357-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 3.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 15/20 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD), 13/18 (AWD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/13 (2WD), 9/12 (AWD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 13/19 (2WD), 13/17 (4WD) The 2009 Jeep Commander gets more available power and a few new features. The 4.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. With its square-rigged styling and seating for seven, Commander gives Jeep buyers an alternative to the sportier Grand Cherokee, even if the two are similar under the skin. These Jeeps have a decent balance of comfort and utility. They can get pricey with options, though. Loaded versions are quite pricey, putting them in league with some premium midsize SUVs that are more refined, get much better fuel economy, and are likely to have higher resale values. |
![]() Class: Midsize SUV Price Range: $28,520 - $43,440 Engine: 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, 305-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, 357-horsepower 5.7-liter V8, 420-horsepower 6.1-liter V8, turbodiesel 215-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 3.7 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 15/20 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD) 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/13 (2WD), 9/13 (4WD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 13/19 (2WD), 13/18(4WD) 6.1 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 11/14 (AWD) 3.0 V6 EPA mpg city/highway (diesel): 18/23 (2WD), 17/22 (AWD) The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee adds more available power. The 4.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. Rear-seat room and comfort may disappoint, and fuel economy with gasoline engines is poor on models we tested. But Grand Cherokee is solid, rides comfortably, has fine ergonomics, and is tenacious off-road. It's also competitively priced. The V6 is too weak for this vehicle's weight, but not the gutsy diesel. The SRT8 is a hot-rod wagon. |
![]() Class: Premium Large SUV Price Range: $47,755 - $53,655 Engine: 310-horsepower 5.4-liter V8 5.4 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/20 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) 5.4 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 10/14 (2WD), 4WD exceeds the weight limit for vehicles in EPA fuel-economy program (4WD) The 2009 Lincoln Navigator gets new technology options and adds the ability to run on E85 fuel, but is largely unchanged. Only one engine, the 310-horsepower 5.4-liter V8, is available and it is E85 capable. Navigator is overshadowed by the more glamorous Cadillac Escalade, which has more power and more luxurious interior appointments. The Lincoln holds an edge over the 'Slade in some important measures. It costs less comparably equipped, has arguably better steering and handling, friendlier cargo management, and vastly superior 3rd-row seating. Navigator's real rival is the Ford Expedition upon which it's based. Except for nameplate status, Expedition delivers everything this Lincoln does, all at a lower price. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $36,130 - $46,780 Engine: 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 5.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 12/18 (2WD), 12/18 (4WD) 5.6 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/13 (2WD), 9/13 (4WD) The 2009 Nissan Armada is largely unchanged. Only one engine, the 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8, is available and it is E85 capable. Armada doesn't lead the large-SUV class in any area. It trails key rivals in 3rd-row comfort and ease of entry and exit. Still, engine performance is laudable, and prices generally undercut those of similarly equipped competitors. Despite quality gaffes in some of our test models, Nissan does have a good reputation for mechanical reliability. |
![]() Class: Large SUV Price Range: $33,160 - $45,660 Engine: 276-horsepower 4.7-liter V8, 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 4.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/17 (2WD), 13/16 (4WD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline):14/19 (2WD), 13/18(4WD) 5.7 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85): 9/12 (4WD) The 2009 Toyota Sequoia is largely unchanged following its 2008 redesign. The 5.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. Sequoia more than holds its own against any rival in every measure except dashboard convenience and cargo space behind the 3rd-row seat. Even those demerits are softened by an otherwise inviting cabin and an overall size that makes close-quarters maneuvering easier than with most in this class. |
| PICKUP TRUCKS |
![]() Class: Large Pickup Truck Price Range: $32,810 - $36,665 Engine: 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, 310-horsepower 5.3-liter V8, 366-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline, 310-320 horsepower): 14/20 (2WD), 14/19 (4WD) 5.3 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (E85 310-320 horsepower): 10/15 (2WD), 11/14 (4WD 6.0 V8 EPA mpg city/highway (gasoline): 14/19 (2WD) 12/17 (4WD) The 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche is offered with a new 6-speed automatic transmission, a heavy-duty trailering package, and a new Luxury package. Both 5.3-liter V8 engines are E85 capable. All engines use GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. Shopping for a pickup truck primarily for passenger use? Check out the Avalanche. Certain versions of the 5.3-liter and all versions of the 6.2-liter V8 are E85 capable, and the 5.3 V8 uses GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. Hybrid vehicles use a 332-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 that pairs with an electric motor. A lengthy list of available features, including 4WD that can be used on dry pavement, makes Silverado an excellent choice for anyone shopping large pickups. Unless you frequently tow heavy loads, the exceptionally refined 5.3-liter V8 should provide more than enough power for most needs. The Hybrid model's price premium will likely be steep, but so are the potential gas savings versus a conventional Silverado. |

The 302-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 is E85 capable. This one deserves a look for its refinement, available all-wheel drive, and curtain side airbags. It's a bit too big for easy daily commuting, but a V8 model is a terrific choice if you tow or do heavy hauling and don't want the bulk of a true large pickup truck. |

The Hybrid has a 6.0-liter V8 engine that pairs with an electric motor. GMC's Sierra and the similar Chevrolet Silverado are among the best large pickup trucks for refinement and available features. Any truck buyer would be well advised to give these big rigs a long, hard look. The Hybrid model's price premium will likely be steep, but so are the potential gas savings versus conventional Sierras. |

Only one engine, a 317-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 is available and is E85 capable. Limited to just one engine and two cab configurations, Titan's appeal is narrower than that of its large-pickup competition, though new longer cargo beds are nice for those who need the extra space. Titan also is strong in performance, comfort, utility, and available safety features. If you need what it offers, this brawny Nissan is worth a look. |

Its 5.3-liter V8 is E85 capable. Like other large vans, Express and similar Savana have all the room most users will ever need, though sheer bulk makes them thirsty with fuel, a handful in traffic, and too big for some garages. The available all-wheel drive, 60/40 split driver-side doors, and side access panels are useful features. |
