The 2009 Dodge Ram represents itself very well against its main competition from Ford and Chevy. I'm not convinced it is the flat-out best in class, but it is a very strong entry in an extremely competitive segment. This is a case where you should shop them all--and maybe the Toyota too--and see which one fits your needs best.

Ed Piotrowski

I wouldn't have called it either, but Dodge has taken Ram from second rate to first class. There's very little to fault here. The extended cab model with the 4.7-liter V8 should provide more than enough space and power to satisfy most pickup buyers. Ford has its work cut out for it with the revamped 2009 F-150. GM and Toyota are now the also-rans in this segment, which absolutely kills me because I like Silverado/Sierra and Tundra (5.7-liter V8 only) quite a bit. Those who genuinely need a big rig for work or play would be remiss not to give this new Ram a thorough look.

Jennifer Geiger

This Ram Quad Cab works on many levels. Used as a work hauler, it is a capable choice with strong power and a composed ride. Used as a family vehicle, it performs in comfort with a pleasing cabin and oodles of storage compartments.

John Biel

The two-wheel drive 1500 SLT Quad Cab in this test started at $29,475--about the middle of the 2009 Ram price ladder--and totaled just under $33,000 with options and delivery. That sounds like a good price for a stout, but generally comfortable, truck with fine power and a top-drawer ride.

Tom Appel

With this last redesign, Ram was promoted from appliance to conveyance. While giving up little, save for some towning capacity, the new Ram with its coil-spring (though not independent) rear suspension is a mighty refined ride and handler. The cabin is nice as well, though soft-touch materials are still hard to find. Make sure to try the 4.7-liter V8 before committing to the Hemi. It's plenty strong, costs less, and should be a wee more frugal.
