Vehicle Highlights
The 2009 Dodge Challenger lineup gains some new models. Entry-level SE and mid-line R/T join the flagship SRT8. SE has a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 5-speed automatic replaces a 4-speed automatic. R/T has a 372-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 matched to a 5-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is also available with the 5.7 V8. Challengers so equipped have 376 hp. The automatic-transmission version of the R/T features Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. The SRT8 has a 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V8 mated to a either a 5-speed automatic transmission or a new-for-2009 6-speed manual. The manual is an extra-cost option and includes a hill-holder clutch that holds the brake for three seconds to aid the driver when launching the vehicle on a incline. The retro-styled Challenger is rear-wheel drive and seats five. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Keyless engine start is available, as is Chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system. A retro-themed Classic option package for the R/T includes body stripes and 20-inch wheels.
COMPETITION
Consumer Guide Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The Sporty/Performance Car class consists of two-seat roadsters, 4-cylinder hatchbacks, and V8 muscle cars. Regardless of configuration, all have an emphasis on affordable performance.
Our Best Buys include the Mazda MX-5, Mini Cooper, and Scion tC. Our Recommended picks are the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, and Volkswagen GTI. New this year is a coupe version of the Pontiac Solstice, and the Nissan 350Z is scheduled for a makeover.
