Vehicle Highlights

The 2009 Dodge Avenger lineup gets smaller, with the demise of the base trim level and versions equipped with all-wheel drive. Avenger shares its basic design with the Sebring from Dodge's parent company Chrysler. SXT and sporty R/T trim levels are offered. The base SE and AWD R/T have been dropped. SXT and R/T come with a 173-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. R/Ts have an optional 235-hp 3.5-liter V6, and versions so equipped also include a sport suspension. The 4-cylinder teams with a 4-speed automatic transmission, and the 3.5 uses a 6-speed automatic. The SXT's 186-hp 2.7-liter V6 has also been discontinued. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Optional is Chrysler's new uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing pictures and digital music files, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information. Other available features include heated and cooled cupholders, remote engine start, and leather upholstery.

Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 5, Saturn Aura, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Prius.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Mitsubishi Galant, and Nissan Maxima.
