ACCELERATION

4WD Hybrid Class Average
6 5.5

Silverado Hybrid accelerates from a stop and passes much like a conventional model, but a faint surge is felt and heard when it shifts between full electric and gasoline operation.

FUEL ECONOMY

4WD Hybrid Class Average
3 2.9

In Consumer Guide testing, a 4WD Hybrid averaged an excellent 20.1 mpg. Silverado Hybrid uses regular-grade gas.

RIDE QUALITY

4WD Hybrid Class Average
4 5.2

Compliant and fairly comfortable, with less reverberation over bumps than in most pickups.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

4WD Hybrid Class Average
3 3.5

Little different than conventional models, Silverado Hybrid handles similarly to other large pickups, with noticeable body lean in fast turns. The brakes are responsive, though the pedal is a bit soft due to regenerative charging that replenishes the hybrid battery.

QUIETNESS

4WD Hybrid Class Average
6 5.7

A strength. The Hybrid is nearly silent at ignition and at rest, but a subtle electrical whirring noise is heard during acceleration and while decelerating. Most other noise sources are well squelched otherwise.

CONTROLS

4WD Hybrid Class Average
6 6.3

The Hybrid's interior places radio and climate controls high on the dashboard, just out of easy reach. The Hybrid's navigation screen features a helpful energy flow display that indicates the status of the vehicle's gas/electric system. It also incorporates, but doesn't complicate, audio functions.

DETAILS

4WD Hybrid Class Average
5 5.4

Despite ample use of hard plastics, nothing looks especially cheap.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

4WD Hybrid Class Average
9 8.4

Ample adult room. The seats are comfortable if somewhat lacking in side support. Visibility is generally good, though wide rear pillars partially block the view to the back corners. Available power-adjustable pedals are a boon for shorter drivers.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

4WD Hybrid Class Average
4 5.4

Headroom is generous. Ditto for legroom. The rear bench is comfortable and supportive.

CARGO ROOM

4WD Hybrid Class Average
5 5.6

The rear seat cushion flips back against the seatback leaving a large cargo area with a nearly flat floor. The bucket seats come with a roomy console bin. The bench seat is available with a flip-down center armrest that doubles as a large storage bin.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

4WD Hybrid Class Average
5 7.2

A lengthy list of available features, including 4WD that can be used on dry pavement, makes any Silverado an excellent choice for anyone shopping large pickups. The Hybrid model's price premium over conventional versions is steep, but so are the potential gas savings. Want a guilt-free rig that can handle all but the heaviest-duty jobs? This is the truck for you.
